CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern track and field hits the road this weekend as the Buccaneers make the trip up I-26 to the Weems Baskin Invitational on Friday and Saturday hosted by the University of South Carolina.
The meet this weekend will be the inaugural meet held at the brand-new, world-class Sheila and Morris Cregger Track on the campus of USC. The Bucs will take on a deep field over the weekend with South Carolina hosting athletes from Appalachian State, Ashland, Alabama State, Allen, Anderson, Benedict, Charleston Southern, Claflin, Coastal Carolina, Coker, College of Charleston, Columbia College, Columbia International, Coppin State, East Tennessee State, Illinois, Marian, Monroe, Morgan State, Morris, North Greenville, Paine, St. Andrew's, St. Augustine's, Savannah State, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, The Citadel, UNC Asheville, UNC Greensboro, VMI and Virginia Tech.
Friday's field events will start off with the men's javelin at 9 a.m. The track events will start on Friday afternoon with the women's 400m dash. Saturday will begin with the men's discus at 9 a.m. while the women's 1500m starts the track events on the final day.
The Buccaneers got off to a strong start to their outdoor season this past weekend at the CSU Spring Break Invitational. Overall, the men's team took three individual titles, while the women's team cruised to the 4x100 title and TeJyrica Robinson won the individual 100m hurdles event.
Freshman jumper Niegel Simmons continued the dominance that won him the Big South Conference Indoor individual long jump championship as the freshman cleared 7.25m to outdistance the field by nearly a quarter-meter. AJ Scott (Unattached) finished second with a jump of 7.03m, while Methodist's Daniel Fisher was third with a jump of 7.00m in the event on Friday.
Sophomore sprinter Joshua Paramore took home the title of Fastest Man at the CSU Spring Break Invitational with the sophomore topping the field in the men's 100-meter dash. After pacing the collegiate field on Friday with a time of 10.85, Paramore once again ran ahead of the pack to capture the individual title with a time of 10.58 on the Bagwell-Settle Track.
Frankie Thomas took home the individual title in the men's high jump on Saturday afternoon. Thomas out-jumped the field in the high jump on Saturday with the freshman clearing 1.95 meters to take the individual title. It was Thomas' second individual title of the 2017 season after taking top honors indoors at the Liberty Elite Invitational back on February 11.
On the women's side, freshman hurdler TeJyrica Robinson was seeded second in the 100m hurdles field following Friday's preliminary round after crossing the line in 14.83. She took nearly a second off of her time in Saturday's championship with a time of 14.07 to win by .15 over Liberty's Katie Dodson.
In the relays, Three clean hand-offs gave Kolisha Coleman a margin to cruise in the women's 4x100m relay as the Buccaneers dominated the field with a time of 46.53 to take the team title in the event. The Bucs, paced by performances by Aluntrea Davis, Jasmine Pilgrim, and Robinson topped Liberty (48.39) and College of Charleston (48.77) to make a strong statement in their first outdoor meet.
