MTRACK PREVIEW: Buccaneers continue indoor slate at Wake Forest Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern men's track and field team is back in action this weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational hosted by Wake Forest University at the JDL Fast Track on January 21 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

JDL Fast Track is quickly becoming one of the premier indoor track and field facilities in the southeast.  To date, the facility has hosted four national championships:  2014 NCAA Division II, 2015 NCAA Division III, 2015 USATF Masters Indoor National Championship, and the 2016 NJCAA Indoor T&F Championships.

The dedicated indoor track and field facility, which opened in January 2012, houses a  200-meter oval track with a Mondotrack FTX surface—the same surface that was used at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Field event areas include two pole vault runways, two long/triple jump runways, one high jump apron and one throws area.

The Buccaneers continue their indoor slate after last weekend's season-opening Clemson Invitational with freshman thrower Ryan Spiecha setting a CSU indoor record in the shot put in his first collegiate event. Spiecha's distance of 15.26 meters surpassed the record set by Richie German (14.92m) back in 2014 at the Bob Pollack Invitational hosted by Clemson.

Senior thrower Jacob Moore also stood out among the field this past weekend after leading the Bucs with a fourth place individual finish in the weight throw event.

The Bucs also had a strong performance on the track with sophomore sprinter Joshua Paramore (200m, 6th), freshman distance runner Jeryk Wilson (1-mile, 8th), and freshman hurdler Vincent Johnson (60m, 3rd) all finishing among the top performers in their respective events.

CSU's jumping trio of Frankie Thomas, Niegel Simmons, and Timothy Davis also had strong performances in their opening collegiate event of the season. Thomas placed third overall in the high jump, while Simmons was fourth in the long jump event. Davis led the Bucs with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump.

Overall, 17 Buccaneers will be making the trip to Winston-Salem to take on the field at the Wake Forest Invitational.

Charleston Southern will be one of 30 schools represented at the meet.

Results from the meet will be available at CSUSports.com following the competition.
