CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern gets its 2016 season underway on Saturday at the Wake Forest Invitational. Competition at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
The Bucs will compete in three more events as they ready themselves for the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships tabbed for Feb. 26-27 in Blacksburg, Va. Led by third-year coach Roosevelt Lofton, CSU is looking to grow with a young roster. Braxton Drummond, a senior long jumper who has set numerous Big South Conference records in the long jump en route to claiming All-American status, will only compete during the outdoor season.
Murray set a personal best in the 55-meter dash at last year's Gamecock Indoor Invitational, and capped his season with an excellent 200-meter time at the Samford Multi and Invitational.
Townsend shattered his personal bests in four events – the 55-meter, 60-meter, 300-meter and 400-meter.
Watkins was strong in his first year after transferring from North Greenville. He placed 8th in the long jump at the Bob Pollock Invitational with a season-best effort of 6.78 meters. Watkins also earned a runner-up finish in the high jump at the Gamecock Indoor Invitational, jumping 1.95 meters.
CSU's roster features five true freshmen and a sophomore. The Bucs will return to the track for competition on January 31 at the Privateer Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
