HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Charleston Southern surged seven places on the final day of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate to claim the team title in their first action of the spring. The Buccaneers erased an 11-stroke deficit on the final day of the tournament with all four scorers finishing under par to take the championship.
Entering the final round at 22-over for the tournament, the Bucs carded the lowest team score of the weekend with a final round 278, 10-under, to claim the title by four strokes. The Bucs' 278 was the lowest team round score of the week by 10 strokes to claim their first win of the season.
Connor Moore (68, 4-under), Alan Smith (69, 3-under), Elliot Gothe (70, 2-under), and Brandon Smith (71, 1-under) combined to provide CSU's second-best team round of the season. The Buccaneers closed out the tournament with an 876, 12-over for the three rounds.
CSU's last round surge helped the Bucs top Furman (880), Memphis (881), Winthrop (885), Davidson (886), and Temple (886) on their way to winning the 19-team tournament.
Connor Moore's 68 paced the Buccaneers in the final round of the day as the sophomore finished seventh overall in the field. He birdied 14, 15, and 18 on the back nine, and then followed up with two more on holes 1 and 8 to finish tied for the lowest round of the day. Moore finished seventh overall in the field after firing a 217, 1-over for the three rounds.
Alan Smith was one stroke back from Moore to climb into the top 10 in the individual standings. The freshman bounced back from a pair of 75s in the first two rounds to record a team-best six birdies on the day. His final round 69 wrapped up his week with a 219 to tie for 10th in the field.
Elliot Gothe's final round 70 was a six-stroke improvement over his second round to help aid the Bucs' efforts. The junior birdied 17 and 18, and added a birdie on the seventh hole to finish tied for 13th overall in the field with a total score of 220.
Brandon Smith's 71, 1-under wrapped up the Bucs' scorers on Wednesday. The Las Vegas, Nev. native posted three birdies on the round to finish tied for 21st with a 222.
Brandon McBride wrapped up the group in the Bucs' lineup in the tournament. McBride's final round 77 put him tied for 58th overall in the field.
