SEA ISLAND, Ga. - Charleston Southern senior Austin James will compete in the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational this Friday-Sunday at Ocean Forest Golf Club. The 54-hole event features 84 of the world's top amateur golfers.
James, the 2016 Big South Player of the Year, started first-round play Friday morning and will play 18 more holes Saturday and Sunday. The Bath, Ontario, native, is making his second appearance in the event. He finished T-58th in 2015.
First held in 2001, the Jones Cup brings together many of the finest amateurs to compete at the Rees Jones designed track, consistently ranked among the United States' top-100 courses. While the golf course proves to be a great venue for this unique event, the Jones Cup's success and popularity can be attributed to the strength of the players who comprise its field. Past participants range from current and future PGA Tour stars Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler, Lucas Glover, Dustin Johnson, Chris Kirk, Jeff Overton, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson and Gary Woodland as well as Past Champions DJ Trahan, Gregg Jones, Nicholas Thompson, Luke List, Kyle Stanley, Patrick Reed and John Peterson.
Following Sunday's final round, James will head to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., to join his CSU teammates for the Sea Best Invitational, the spring season's first event. James currently sits 130th in the Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking. He has made back-to-back appearances in the match play portion of the United States Amateur. James reached the quarterfinals and played on national television in the event in 2015.
