Wilson named Big South Coach of the Year; James named Player of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charleston Southern Head Coach Mike Wilson was honored as the 2016 Big South Coach of the Year and Austin James was named 2016 Big South Player of the Year in an awards ceremony following the 2016 Big South Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday.

Wilson has led the Buccaneers to the best golf season in school history, putting together one of the best individual wins and the highest national ranking across all sports in Charleston Southern history. Wilson, who is closing out his sixth season as the Bucs' Head Coach, coached CSU to a national ranking in the mid-20's in November, following a win at the Kiawah Classic against a field which included Virginia, Duke, and Georgia Tech, some of college golf's elite.

The Bucs, ranked No. 59 nationally, are likely headed to their second consecutive NCAA Championship berth in May and the first at-large NCAA bid by any sport in CSU history. The Bucs own the 2015 Big South Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Then-freshmanR.J. Keur was the medalist at 8-under.

Junior Austin James has been a big reason for CSU's success. After a quarterfinal appearance in the U.S. Amateur last August, James capped one of the best golf seasons in CSU history with a five-shot win on Tuesday at the 2016 Big South Championship, played at The Patriot.

James (-11) came up one stroke shy of Dustin Johnson's championship record of 12-under for 54 holes.

James had nine Top 10 finishes during the course of his season and has finished in the top three in has last four tournaments. The Bath, Ontario native has been under par in 13 of his last 14 collegiate rounds. He was ranked No. 17 nationally as of Tuesday, prior to his Big South medalist effort.

Sophomore R.J. Keur was named All-Big South on Tuesday as well. Keur's best finish came at the Kiawah Classic, where he took second and led the Bucs to one of the best wins in school history. He was sixth at this year's Big South Championship after winning the event last season.

Sophomore Jake Ezell was named to the All-Big South Academic Team. He is a communications major with a 3.54 GPA.
