DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. - Nicolas Baena and David Denlinger lead Charleston Southern following the first round of the Rees Jones Invitational hosted by South Carolina at Haig Point on Daufuskie Island at the Jones Signature Course as the CSU duo combined to shoot matching 77s on the opening road for the Bucs.
Charleston Southern currently sits 12th overall among the teams in play in the tournament over the three day event which wraps up on Tuesday afternoon after shooting a combined score of 311, 23-over par on the day in their first action on the course.
Baena and Denlinger paced the Bucs with matching 77s, 5-over par in their first action on the 2013 season to sit in a tie for 41st overall following the conclusion of the first day. Baena birdied hole 3, while Denlinger connected on a birdie on hole 6 for the Bucs.
Ross Thomson finished the first 18 holes one stroke behind the duo, finishing with a 78, 6-over par on the afternoon, while Austin James and Jarrett Swan both finished one stroke behind with 79s. James' highlight of the round came with a birdie on hole 16, while Swan joined Baena with a birdie on hole 3 for the Bucs.
CJ Liner also took on the field as an individual for head coach Mike Wilson, finishing the round with a 78, including a birdie on the par 5, hole 14 to finish the afternoon with a round of 6-over par.
Charleston Southern takes on the field again tomorrow as the Bucs look to move up the standings as CSU tees off at 8:40 a.m.
