NINETY-SIX, S.C. - Charleston Southern junior Ross Thomson fired a 68 (-4) to sole possession of third and the Bucs shot a 294 (+6), the lowest round of the day, to take fifth at the 2013 Big South Championships, which wrapped up Tuesday afternoon at The Patriot Golf Club.
CSU's third-round total was a stroke better than Liberty's 295 for the lowest round of the day and matched the second-lowest round of the tournament. Coastal Carolina took the team title with a two-stroke victory over Liberty with a 296 in the final round. Winthrop took third finishing 10 back of CCU. Liberty's Mathieu Fanasse won the tournament by three strokes at 5-under par (211), finishing ahead of Coastal Carolina's Sebastian Soderberg (-2) and Thomson (+2).
The Buccaneers finished three strokes ahead of Gardner-Webb to take fifth after starting the day in ninth. The finish left Bucs' Head Coach Mike Wilson excited with the way his team closed out its season.
"I am really proud of the way our team battled today," Wilson said following the round. "The course was really difficult and we handled adversity much better today than the first two days. It's really nice to end the season on high note."
Thomson wraps up his junior season playing some of the best golf of his career. His 68 on Tuesday was his second-lowest round of the season. He took third after shooting 34 (-2) on both sides and had five birdies in the round. He also picked up his third Top 5 and sixth Top 10 finish of the year.
"Ross played an excellent round of golf today," Wilson said. "He birdied some difficult holes and his birdie on the last was huge for the team. He played a very solid tournament with few mistakes. I am hopeful he makes All-Big South again, making him one of a few Bucs to accomplish that feat."
Thomson got some help from his teammates to help the Bucs climb to the top half of the final leaderboard.
Sophomore Jarrett Swan fired a 1-over 73 and played his last six holes at 1-under to get the Bucs to the clubhouse with a second strong score. He finished 15th, climbing nine spots in the final round, up from 24th.
Sophomore C.J. Liner closed the tournament with a 76 (+4) to climb to 35th. After a rough start, he had two birdies over his final six holes to play his last 11 holes at even par.
Freshman Nicolas Baena shot a 77 (+5) to finish tied for 39th, and sophomore Choo Teck Ng shot a 78 (+5) to finish 43rd.
