CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern redshirt sophomore quarterback Shane Bucenell was named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) 2017 FCS National Performer of the Year Preseason Watch List on Tuesday morning.
The Wesley Chapel, Fla., native was one of 42 returning players across the FCS to be selected to the preseason watch list and one of three players from the Big South Conference chosen. Joining Bucenell on the list was Gardner-Webb's Tyrell Maxwell and Kennesaw State's Chandler Burks.
Bucenell returns to helm the Bucs' quarterback position heading into the 2017 season after a campaign that saw him earn Big South Freshman of the Week honors twice as CSU returned to the FCS Playoffs for the second consecutive season. Bucenell picked up wins in his first four starts on his way to posting a 6-2 record as CSU's quarterback in 2016, including key victories over Coastal Carolina, Liberty, and Kennesaw State.
The CSU quarterback tied for the Big South lead with 15 touchdown passes and finished the season second overall in total touchdowns with 19. In the Bucs' 59-58 double overtime win over the Chanticleers, Bucenell posted a season-high four touchdown passes to go with 149 passing yards. He added three passing touchdowns apiece in the Bucs' wins over Liberty and Bucknell.
Bucenell also returns as CSU's leading rusher heading into the 2017 season after finishing the year with 325 yards and four touchdowns.
The 2017 CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy is a 22-inch K-9 optic crystal tower with eight-inch crystal football on top. All FCS players are eligible for the award. The award winner will be announced January 10, 2018.
