CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three Charleston Southern players have been recognized with weekly honors by the Big South Conference thanks to their roles in the Bucs' 48-26 win at Liberty on Saturday. Quarterback Shane Bucenell was named Come Ready Nutrition Big South Freshman of the Week. Junior defensive end Anthony Ellis was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week, while senior Darius Hammond garnered a nod as Special Teams Player of the Week.
CSU's convincing victory puts the program one win away from a second consecutive Big South championship and FCS Playoff bid. The Bucs host Kennesaw State in the regular season finale this Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
Bucenell threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns, and added a 57-yard rushing score. He hooked up with Travay Hatten, Mike Holloway and Kameron Brown on first half strikes that helped CSU build a 31-6 halftime lead. Bucenell broke free for a 57-yard score to stake the Bucs to a 32-point advantage just over a minute into the third quarter. Bucenell was also named Big South Freshman of the Week following his performance in the double overtime win at Coastal Carolina last month.
Ellis keyed a dominant defensive showing that limited Liberty to 75 yards in the first half. The Bucs held the Flames to 24 yards on 16 plays in the second quarter to push their edge to 31-6. Ellis finished the game with six tackles, a season-high 3.5 tackles-for-loss and a sack. Ellis currently places the Big South in both sacks (7.0) and TFL's (13.0).
Hammond accounted for 154 yards on seven returns in the victory. He broke a season-long 83-yard kickoff return to set up a field goal that started CSU's second quarter onslaught.
Kennesaw State quarterback Chandler Burks was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week.
