CHARLESTON, S.C. - Practice officially begins for the 2017 season for the CSU baseball team with a scrimmage on January 27 as the Buccaneers continue preparation for interim head coach Adam Ward's first season at the helm.
The Buc are gearing up for three scrimmage weekends when practice officially starts on the 27th. The team will scrimmage Friday-Sunday in their opening weekend of practice as they hit the ground running ahead of their February 17 opener against Delaware State.
"We are very excited about the start of spring practice and what lies ahead for this team," Ward said. "These three weeks of team practice are all about getting pitchers enough innings to build up their arms and hitters enough at-bats to be prepared to face live pitching on February 17. Several position battles and pitching roles are still to be determined."
The Buccaneers have been in-and-out of individual and team practices since arriving on campus in August in preparations for the 53-game schedule. CSU welcomed 17 new players to the roster in the fall and Ward will be looking for them to make an impact on the field in the coming season
"There are a lot of newcomers on this roster, but they are a very talented group that we are looking forward to watching compete this spring," Ward commented on the roster make-up. "We also have a good group of veterans that have performed well in their careers up to this point and will be counted on to provide leadership."
The temperature over the next week will be in the 50s and 60s out at the Ballpark and CSU will expect similar weather in February as the Buccaneers prepare for the season opener.
