ATLANTA – Charleston Southern claimed their fourth series victory in as many tries as they split a doubleheader with Georgia State on Saturday. After dropping the first game 5-2, they responded with a 9-1 victory in the nightcap to end their first weekend on the road.
GAME ONE
Each team was able to have early fireworks, tallying two runs apiece in the first inning.
Gavin Speirs had a two RBI double with the bases loaded that scored
Alex Marot and
Chandler Tuupo for the brief 2-0 lead. In the bottom half, an RBI double and RBI on a fielder's choice scored two allowing the Panthers to bring it level at two each. In the third, the game entered a lightning delay and was shortly lived.
The teams settled in after that tossing 0s up on the scoreboard for nearly the rest of the ballgame. Georgia State's offense was able to break through in the sixth with a walk with the bases loaded and shortly followed by a two RBI single to left center to move the scoreline to 5-2, what proved to the final score for the day.
At the plate, Charleston Southern finished with six hits with Marot leading the way with two. They also drew four walks and two hit by pitches in the contest.
On the mound,
Brady Bickett had the start and picked up the loss, his first of the year, as he threw 5.1 with three earned runs being charged to him. He allowed five hits and no walks.
Drew Dawson was the first out of the bullpen and threw 0.1 of a frame and allowed an earned run.
Christian Krause had the final 2.1 of work and did not allow a run t score while giving up two hits and two walks.
GAME TWO
Charleston Southern was able to quickly return to their winning ways in the second game of the day cruising to a 9-1 victory to clinch the series. The teams traded 0s for the first three innings with neither team able to score.
In the fourth, Charleston Southern broke the game open with five runs in the frame.
Ethan Reader got the action going with a single to center to score two runs when the bases were loaded. Later in the inning,
Blake Edgmon had an RBI single up the middle. After this, Reader and Edgmon were able to move around the rest of the bases off wild pitches for the fourth and fifth runs of the day.
In the fifth,
Caden Wolfley drew a walk when the bases were loaded and
Tyler Wright singled to center to score two more runs to make it an 8-0 ballgame. Georgia State got their lone run of the day in the bottom half of the inning while the Bucs got another in the sixth to make the scoreline 9-1.
Mason Reising and Reader both lead them at the plate with two hits. They finished the day with eight hits as a squad to go with eight walks and four hit by pitches.
Matt Gallant started for the Bucs and went a season-long 5.0 innings needing just 65 pitches to go that long. He allowed just three hits and a walk in the outing to go with one earned run.
Aydan Smith was the lone arm used out of the bullpen and threw a scoreless 2.0 while giving up three hits.
