COLUMBIA, S.C. – Charleston Southern dropped their midweek contest at South Carolina on Wednesday evening by a final score of 4-1. The loss moves them to 10-2 on the year, still ranking as their best start through 12 games in program history.
The Gamecocks scored a run in the bottom of the first and the second to gain an early 2-0 lead. They notched the first off a sacrifice fly and the other off a solo home run.
Charleston Southern loaded the bases with the bottom of the order with no outs in the top of the fifth but were unable to move anyone and left them all stranded.
In the sixth, the Buccaneers tallied lone run.
Tyler Wright got aboard with a single to third and moved to third during
Nathan Martinez' at bat.
Gavin Speirs brought Wright home with a single to center field to cut their deficit to 2-1. South Carolina immediately struck back with a two RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to push their advantage to 4-1 which proved to be the final score.
At the plate, Charleston Southern finished with nine hits, two more than the hosts.
Kain Collins led the squad with three hits while Wright also had multiple with two on the night.
In total, the Bucs used six arms in the contest.
Zach Stichweh and
Christian Krause were the top performers on the day. Stichweh tossed 3.0 scoreless and allowed just two hits. Krause had the final 2.1 of work and allowed none to score and gave up one hit.
Charleston Southern return to action this weekend for their first road series of the year. They will open the series against Georgia State on Friday evening with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
