CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern roared back in the second half of their midweek game against North Florida on Tuesday evening. The Bucs won by a final of 11-6, tallying all their scoring in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and improve their record to 14-6.
North Florida tallied three runs in the top of the first to gain an early lead. Three consecutive hits with the latter two driving in runs started scoring and a single later in the frame placed it at 3-0. In the fourth, a wild pitch allowed another to score placing the Ospreys' lead at 4-0.
In the sixth, the Buccaneer offense finally broke through and got their first run of the day.
Caden Wolfley had a leadoff single and
Tyler Wright was hit by a pitch.
Chandler Tuupo had an RBI single to score Wolfley and
Alex Marot's double brought Wright home to cut their deficit to 4-2.
The seventh saw Charleston Southern's offense continue to find life, scoring five runs off six hits to take their first lead of the day. Each of the first three batters reached with Pringle and Edgmon getting singles while Wolfley drew a walk. Wright grounded into a double play, but it scored Pringle. After that, Tuupo had an RBI single to tie the game and a Marot single to left field scored
Michael Rogers who entered as a pinch runner for Tuupo and gave the Bucs the lead at 5-4. The next batter was
Mason Reising who, on the first pitch, turned on it and sent it over the fence in left center, pushing their newfound advantage to 7-4.
In the eighth, the Osprey scratched two unearned runs across home to cut their deficit to one run at 7-6. In the Bucs' half of the frame Wolfley had an RBI groundout to score Pringle and
Kain Collins had an RBI single as well in the inning. Marot picked up an RBI double, and
Nathan Martinez had an RBI single to place the score at 11-6.
Pringle and Marot led the team at the plate with three hits apiece. Wolfley and Tuupo added two each to help the Bucs combine for 15 total on the day. Marot had the team-high of three RBIs while Tuupo and Reising had two each.
Zach Stichweh started for the Bucs on the mound and threw the first 3.2 allowing five hits and two walks to go with the four earned runs, but struck out five batters. After this,
Drew Dawson threw a scoreless 1.1 with three strikeouts followed by
Corbin Payne working a scoreless frame.
Aydan Smith tossed the next 1.2 without allowing an earned run to score.
Next up for Charleston Southern is Gardner-Webb for a weekend series. It will mark the first weekend of Big South action for the Buccaneers and the second for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The weekend will also celebrate the 1996 Conference Championship squad with scheduled activities to recognize the group at all three games.
