ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Charleston Southern dropped a conference road game on Saturday, falling to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in overtime by a final score of 68-63, as the Bulldogs completed the season sweep of the Buccaneers.
The Bucs (9-16, 6-6 in conf.) had the lead late, as
Shimei Muhammad hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left, but the Bulldogs (10-16, 4-9 in conf.) drew a foul with nine seconds to go in regulation to force overtime with a 58-58 tie.
Neither team scored in overtime until
Catherine Alben scored on a fastbreak layup with 2:44 to go, but Asheville responded with five-straight points of their own to take a 65-60 lead with 45 seconds left.
Charleston Southern started off strong, as
Kennedi Jackson scored in the paint with 43 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Bucs a 14-9 lead after one. Charleston Southern pushed their lead to eight points when Alben hit a two-point jumper with 8:28 left to go up 20-12.
Then, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to tie the game with 4:53 left to go in the first half. A layup by
Madison Adamson with 26 seconds left in the first half made it 27-26 in favor of the Bucs at intermission. The Bucs lead in the second half was as high as six points when
Keshunti Nichols made it 46-40 with 14 seconds left in the third quarter.
Charleston Southern had three double-figure scorers, led by Muhammad who scored a season-high 18 points on 5/10 shooting and 3 for 4 shooting from beyond the arc.
Kennedi Jackson had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Adamson led the Bucs with 11 rebounds and 10 points, as the Hoover, AL native picked up her third double-double of the season.

The Bucs are back at home on Wednesday, as they host USC Upstate in the second matchup of the season with the Spartans. Charleston Southern nearly overcame a 17-point deficit to Upstate back in January, falling 57-56 in Spartanburg on Jan. 13. Tip-off is at 6 PM.
