Bucs Hold Off Blue Hose; Pick Up First Conference Win

CLINTON, S.C. –The Charleston Southern women's basketball team began Big South play with a 1-0 record with a 61-57 road win over the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Wednesday night. This was the first road win for the Bucs over the Blue Hose since 2019.
 
Catherine Alben played in 39 minutes scoring 24 points to lead all scorers. She shot 45.0% from the field and was 6/9 from beyond the arc, helping the Bucs (4-10, 1-0 in conference) escape the late rally from the Blue Hose (9-7, 0-1 in conference). Kennedi Jackson and Maya Robinson both had eight points, and Madison Adamson led the Bucs with seven rebounds.
 
Charleston Southern was ahead 51-39 entering the fourth quarter but went on a scoreless streak over a seven-minute period allowing Presbyterian to cut the deficit to five with 3:08 left. The Blue Hose were able to cut to three with 30 seconds left, but a free throw by Jordan Berry sealed it for the Buccaneers with 11 seconds left. Charleston Southern shot a season-low 6/16 from the  free throw line including 5/14 in the fourth quarter.
 
The Bucs jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter, as Shimei Muhammad made it 12-5 with a three pointer. Presbyterian responded by tying the game at 14 to end the first quarter. Charleston Southern was able to take a six-point lead at halftime, as they outscored Presbyterian 19-13 in the second quarter. The Blue Hose had a six-point lead with 4:54 left in the first half, but Charleston Southern finished the half on a 14-3 run to end the half highlighted by four three pointers from Alben.
 
Out of the locker room, Charleston Southern expanded their lead to 12 points with a fast-break layup from Robinson to make it 39-27 with 6:59 left in the third quarter. They led by as much as 17 points in the third quarter, as a jumper by Muhammad made it 51-34 with 2:18 left in the third quarter.
 
The Bucs shot 37.7% from the field and were 42.9% from beyond the arc. They tied a season-low in turnovers on Wednesday, as they only gave the ball away 13 times leading to six points the other way. Charleston Southern forced 23 turnovers which resulted in 26 points.
