ROCK HILL, S.C. – After falling behind in the first quarter, the Charleston Southern women's basketball team defeated the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday by a 64-57 score. This was their second win of the season against Winthrop and their first road win of the season.
Zaire Hicks tied a season-high in points today with 13 with seven assists and three rebounds.
Kennedi Jackson was right behind her with 12 points and
Sha'Mya Leigh had 11.
On the defensive side,
Saniya Jones had a career-high eight blocks and 11 rebounds while scoring four points.
First Half
The Eagles came out firing, out-scoring the Bucs (5-22, 3-13 in conference) 15-7 in the first quarter. CSU got it going in the second quarter, going on a 12-0 run through the first six minutes to take a 19-15 lead with 4:02 left in the first half.
Tori Gittens had eight of the first 19 points, knocking down two three-pointers.
Winthrop was able to get it to within three, but
Madison Adamson and
Alba Garcia each knocked one down from beyond the arc as the Bucs took a 28-22 lead into the locker room.
Second Half
The Bucs lead got to as high as eight points in the third quarter, as Hicks made a jumper with 9:36 left to give the Bucs a 30-22 lead. The Eagles did not go away, as they cut the Buccaneer lead to four with 4:03 left in the quarter, but the Bucs brought the lead back up to late with a jumper by
Kennedi Jackson.
In a high-scoring fourth quarter, the Eagles were able to trim the deficit to three multiple times; however, Leigh and
Kennedi Jackson both hit two-point jump shots to push the lead back to seven at 53-46 with 2:48 remaining in the game.
Down the stretch, the Bucs were 7/8 from the free throw line (9/13 overall) and were able to pull out the seven-point victory.
Next Time Out
The Bucs are back at the Buc Dome at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night for the final home game of the season against UNC Asheville. The team will honor its seniors prior to the start of the game.
