Strong Start Not Enough; Bucs Fall to Lancers

FARMVILLE, V.A. - Despite a fast start, the Charleston Southern women's basketball team fell at the hands of the Longwood Lancers on Wednesday by a final score of 80-70.

Madison Adamson notched her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Catherine Alben was the Bucs' leading scorer with 16 points, and Carleigh Andrews scored 11 in just her second start of the season.

The Bucs (2-12, 0-3 in conference) immediately jumped out to a lead in Farmville, getting to as high as 10 points when Zaire Hicks knocked down a jumper to make it 16-6 with 2:09 left in the first quarter. Hicks scored eight points as the Bucs took an 18-10 lead into the second quarter, when the Lancers (2-12, 1-2 in conference) turned things up offensively.

After Alben knocked down a lay-up to push the Buccaneer lead to 22-10, the Lancers went on a run, outscoring the Bucs 27-15 in the second quarter to take a four-point lead into the locker room at 37-33. Longwood took their first lead of the game when they hit a jumper to make it 35-33 with 16 seconds left.

In the second half, the Bucs came out firing, starting it on a 6-0 run to get the lead back to make it 39-37 with 8:27 left in the third quarter. Then, the Lancers went on a 12-2 run to expand their lead to eight points with 5:32 left in the third quarter. The Bucs cut the deficit to two late in the third quarter.

The Bucs got the lead back with 9:23 left in the fourth quarter when Andrews knocked down a jumper to make it 58-57, but that lead soon evaporated as the Lancers went on another run to push their lead to five, but the Bucs would continue to fight, cutting the deficit to one with 5:44 left; however, the Lancers scored 18 points in the final five minutes to take the 80-70 victory and snapping their 11-game losing streak.
