Campbell Welcomes Charleston Southern for Weekend Clash

CHARLESTON, S.C. -  The Charleston Southern women's basketball team rounds out its two-game road trip with a trip to Buies Creek, N.C. for a battle with the Campbell Fighting Camels.

Campbell
The Fighting Camels have exceeded expectations so far this season, who were picked to finish third in the Big South standing during the preseason. They come into this game with a 10-8 record (5-2 in conference) and are in second place in the Big South standings. Beating Campbell at home will be quite test for the Bucs, as the Fighting Camels are an impressive 7-1 at John W. Pope Convocation Center. That is the second best home record in the conference.

Campbell is led by Head Coach Ronny Fisher, who is in his seventh season at the helm. During his time in Buies Creek, he has won Big South Coach of the Year three times and is the winningest active coach in the conference to date. In his first six seasons, the Fighting Camels have averaged 20 wins per season and were Big South tournament runner-ups in 2019, 2021 and 2022, giving them a spot in the WNIT for the first time in school history.

This season, Fisher prides his team on aggressive play on the inside, and it has paid dividends. Coming into Saturday's match-up, the Fighting Camels are tops in the Big South in rebounding, both offensively and defensively. They also lead the conference in blocked shots, defensive field goal percentage (33.1%) and scoring defense, only giving up 50 points per game.

Charleston Southern
  • The Bucs (2-16, 0-7 in conference) are still in search of their first conference win. They go into Saturday's game with a 12-game losing streak, searching for their first win since November 23rd against Western Carolina.
  • This will be the best defensive team that the Bucs have played all season during conference play. It will be quite the challenge for the Bucs, who are eighth in the Big South in scoring offense, averaging just under 52 points per game.
  • While Campbell's strength has been getting rebounds and playing defense, it will be interesting to see the battle for offensive rebounds. The Bucs are fifth in the Big South in offensive rebounding this season, led by Madison Adamson, who averages 6.2 rebounds per game.
  • Catherine Alben continues to make her case for Big South Freshman of the Year. She is the leading scorer on the Bucs this season, averaging 10.6 points per game and has scored over 20 points in two games this season.
  • Sha"Mya Leigh is the only player on the team to start all 18 games for the Bucs this season. On top of starting all 18 games, she has played all 40 minutes five times this season; twice in the past three games. She is averaging 7.3 points in 33.6 minutes per game
