Women's Basketball Looking for First Conference Win in High Point

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern women's basketball hits the road once again, as they travel to High Point, N.C. to take on the Panthers in a Wednesday night battle. The Bucs (2-13, 0-4 in conference) are looking for not only their first conference win of the season, but their first road win as well. They are 0-8 away from the Buc Dome in 2022-23.

High Point
After finishing 13-5 in the Big South conference and finishing fifth overall a year ago, the Panthers come into this game with a 4-10 (2-2 in conference) record. Of their four wins, three of them are at home. In their last timeout, they fell at the hands of USC Upstate last Saturday by a 62-60 score. On the offensive side, the Panthers are led by Skyler Curran, who is second in the Big South in points per game (14.86 ppg), while on defense, Callie Scheier is second in the Big South in steals with 2.71 per game.

The Panthers are led by Head Coach Chelsea Banbury, who was hired as the High Point women's basketball coach back in 2019. To say that she has been successful at High Point would be an understatement. In just her second year at the helm, Banbury led the Panthers to a Big South title and the first trip into the NCAA Tournament in school history. She was also back-to-back Big South Coach of the Year in 2020 and 2021. This season, her team was picked to finish first in the Big South and had three players selected for conference-preseason honors.

Charleston Southern
  • Despite the Bucs record this season, they have been playing much better over the last three games. After their 20-point loss against Big South-leading Gardner-Webb to open conference play, the Bucs have only lost their past three games by an average of six points.
  • Coming into conference play, the Bucs were averaging roughly 24 turnovers per game. Through the first four conference games, they have cut down their turnovers, averaging 20.5 per game in the Big South.
  • CSU picked up the defensive intensity in their past three games as well. They have double-digit steals against USC Upstate, Longwood and Presbyterian; including a season-high 13 steals and 22 total turnovers against the Blue Hose last timeout. They are averaging 20.3 forced turnovers per game during that span.
  • One area that the Bucs have been very good in is offensive rebounding. They are fourth in the conference in that category. Madison Adamson leads the team with 87 total rebounds, but Kennedi Jackson is right behind her with 82.
  • Catherine Alben is making her case for Freshman of the Year in the Big South. She is the first player from Charleston Southern to receive any sort of Big South honors in the 2022-23 season. She leads the team and is 11th in the conference, averaging 10.5 points per game.
  • After stealing the ball five times last Saturday, Alben leads the team with 20 on the season. Zaire Hicks is right behind her with 19. Hicks also leads the team with 28 assists on the season.
  • Other freshman have continued to play early on for Head Coach Clarisse Garcia this season. Carleigh Andrews has started the past two games for the Bucs. Against Longwood on January 4th, she had 11 points and two rebounds in 27 minutes.
  • Sha'Mya Leigh is the only player to start all 15 games for the Bucs this season. Through the first 15 games, she is averaging 32.7 minutes per game, and shooting 36.6% from the field while averaging 6.9 points per game.
