CHARLESTON, S.C. – It wasn't until midway through the final period when a two-possession game or less opened up more in a tightly-played Big South matchup Saturday afternoon that turned into visiting Presbyterian's favor, as Charleston Southern was unable to close out a 60-49 setback inside the Buc Dome.
LATE SPURT SEALS IT
The two sides went toe-to-toe for the first 34 minutes, including
Tori Gittens burying a 3-pointer following
Sharita Godfrey's steal with just over eight minutes left. The triple knotted the score at 42-42, the game's eighth tie that had seen neither side lead by more than six up to that point.
The Blue Hose responded, however, when Jade Compton finished a jumper in the paint and Presbyterian (9-11, 4-6 Big South) never trailed again as it sparked a 12-2 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach for the Buccaneers. PC's last-10 points in the stretch were consecutive, finished by a layup from Tionna Carter.
EXTENDING THE STREAK TO FIVE
Janaia Fargo continued to find her scoring touch for Charleston Southern (2-19, 2-8 Big South), sharing team-high honors with
Alyssia Faye as each netted 10. Fargo reached double-digit points for the fifth-straight contest, four of which were exactly 10.
Since the second league game of the campaign, at Gardner-Webb Jan. 5, she has tallied seven double-figure performances, including career highs of 18 against the Runnin' Bulldogs and against USC Upstate Jan. 22. Over that span, she is averaging 11.2 points per game in the nine contests.
FAYE HITS TWO FROM DEEP, AGAIN
Supporting Faye's 10 points were a pair of 3-pointers, the second time in the last-four outings in which she connected on multiple from behind the arc. She hit both of her attempts against the Blue Hose to match her single-game best, which previously came against USC Upstate. Prior to that home clash with the Spartans, Faye had not made more than one trifecta in a game throughout her career.
WINANS LONE BUC AT THE LINE
The Buccaneers did not have many trips to the foul line Saturday but it was
Makenna Winans who did all the work. She attempted all five charity tosses for CSU, her most attempts of the season. She finished with nine points, another season high, and her most since posting 11 against UNC Asheville, Jan. 16, 2021, which was also the last time she had as many trips to the line with a career-high tying six.
UP NEXT
Charleston Southern remains at home for its next contest, a 6 p.m. Wednesday tip-off with Gardner-Webb on ESPN+. It will conclude the second two-game homestand for the Buccaneers and third overall this season.
