Bucs fall in home opener to Georgia Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Elizabeth Olsen scored Charleston Southern's first goal of the 2021 season Sunday afternoon but visiting Georgia Southern spoiled the Bucs' home opener in a 5-1 setback at the CSU Soccer Field.

Olsen's goal was a header off a Daniela Contreras corner kick in the 64th minute. The two combined for four of CSU's nine shots in the match. Jenna Moran made four saves in net for the Bucs, including a penalty kick save in the second half

Elis Nemtsov and Marcela Montoya combined to score all five of the Eagles' goals, with Montoya netting a hat trick and Nemtsov scoring a brace. Michaela English played 75 of the 90 minutes in goal for Georgia Southern, making three saves.

A trio of first-half goals put Charleston Southern in an early hole, as Montoya scored twice inside the first 30 minutes. The first goal came off a deflection and the second was a tap-in goal off a Faith Phillips cross. Nemtsov capped the scoring in the opening 45 minutes with a low shot into the bottom right corner.

Momentum started to shift towards the Bucs early in the second half when Moran stopped Montoya on a penalty kick and the ensuing rebound was sent over the crossbar. The Bucs then got on the board within 10 minutes of the save, as Contreras' corner kick found Olsen, who headed in her first goal as a Buc.

The Eagles quickly erased that momentum, as Nemtsov and Montoya scored within a three-minute span to put a stranglehold on the match. The Bucs were limited to just one shot in the final 25 minutes, as the Eagles closed out their second straight win.
