CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Baylee Eaton threw 4.2 scoreless innings Tuesday evening, as Charleston Southern split a doubleheader with crosstown rival College of Charleston.
The visiting Cougars took the opening game, 6-2, before the Bucs earned the split with a 6-4 win in the second half of the twin bill.
Brooklynn Brewington and
SeaEnna Satcher each had a multi-hit game in the doubleheader, while
Madison Koger and
Rhiana Hubbard had hits in both games for the Bucs.
Holly Clark struck out four in 6.1 innings in the first game, while Eaton allowed one hit in 4.0 innings of relief to earn her second win of the season in the nightcap.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first game on a pair of errors, but CSU tied it in the second after Satcher led off the inning with a single and Hubbard drove her in with a sacrifice fly. The visitors took the lead back in the third on a solo homer and never relinquished it.
A three-run shot in the sixth off the bat of Payton Wade accounted for most of the damage, as the College of Charleston built a 6-1 lead heading into CSU's final at-bats of the game. Satcher hit a solo homer to center, her second of the season, in the seventh, but the Bucs were unable to score past that in the opener.
Charleston Southern took an early lead in the second game when Brewington scored on a passed ball in the first inning. The Cougars took the lead with three runs in the top of the second, but CSU responded with a four spot in the bottom half of the inning despite just one hit in the frame.
Sarah Brown and
Meghan Gagliano each scored on wild pitches,
Ashlyn Cribb scored on an error and Koger drove Brewington in with a sacrifice fly.
The visitors cut into the Bucs' lead with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, but CSU responded one inning later.
Ashley Meckley hit her team-leading fifth homer of the season to left center to lead off the bottom of the fifth, re-establishing Charleston Southern's two-run lead. Eaton left the tying runner on second base in the seventh to preserve the win for the Bucs.
