Blue Hose sweeps pair of low-scoring games from Bucs

CLINTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern allowed just six runs in a doubleheader Saturday against Presbyterian, but it was enough for the Blue Hose to win both games over the visiting Buccaneers at the PC Softball Complex.

PC took the first game, 2-1, and won the second by a 4-1 scoreline.

Annah Junge threw a complete game in the series opener, allowing just one earned run with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. SeaEnna Satcher had a pair of hits, including an RBI single, in the first game of the day, while Dominique Mannerino had the Bucs' lone extra-base hit of the opener with a double in the sixth.

Erika Cooper had two hits, including a triple, in the second game, while Ashlyn Cribb recorded the lone RBI for the Bucs in the second half of the twin bill. Alyssa Heinrich got the start in the circle and allowed four runs in 5.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts.

PC opened the scoring in the first when Jaiden Tweed hit an RBI single up the middle in the fourth inning to score Rebecca Clark. The Bucs tied the game in the sixth with a pair of two-out hits, as Mannerino doubled to right and Satcher drove her in with a single to left center. The home side took the lead once again in the bottom of the sixth on a Tweed sacrifice fly, which scored Courtney White. CSU loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but Mannerino grounded into a fielder's choice and Satcher flied out to end the game.

The Blue Hose got off to a quick start in the second game with a pair of first-inning runs, using a Rebecca Clark sacrifice fly and a Tweed RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. PC extended its lead to three in the third inning on a Lexi Palazzo RBI double. CSU got a run back in the fifth when Cooper tripled to right and Cribb drove her in with a sacrifice fly, but Palazzo's second RBI double of the game in the bottom half of the inning pushed the Blue Hose lead back to three, a margin the Bucs were unable to dent.

Notes and News
  • Brooklynn Brewington extended her hit streak and on-base streak to seven games.
  • Satcher's two-hit game in the series opener was her second multi-hit game of the season. Both have come in Big South games.
  • Junge's complete game was her first of the season. Despite that statistic, it is not the longest appearance she has had this year, as she pitched 8.0 innings against Radford on March 19.
  • Junge's three strikeouts also tied a season high, which she has set on two previous occasions this year.
  • Despite an 0-1 record, Junge now has a 2.17 ERA in 19.1 innings against Big South competition this season.
  • Cooper's triple in the fifth inning was the first of her career and just the second three-bagger for the Bucs this season.
  • Cooper's two-hit game in the second half of the doubleheader was the first multi-hit game of her career.
  • Katelyn Norris recorded her first extra-base hit of the season with a two-out double in the third inning of the second game.
  • Meckley's on-base streak to begin the season was snapped at 13 games after she failed to reach base in the second half of the doubleheader.
