Spartans take doubleheader Friday over Bucs to open Big South play

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern softball fell in a pair of contests to USC Upstate Friday from the CSU Softball Field as they opened Big South play, falling 8-6 and 5-0.

USC Upstate (10-4, 2-0 Big South) struck first in both contests and used a late-inning rally to take game one before a complete game shutout from Savannah Brown ended the day in a sweep for the Spartans. Charleston Southern (1-5, 0-2 Big South) was led offensively by a four-hit day across the twinbill as well as two runs scored wile Ashlyn Cribb and Madison Koger each added a pair of hits.

After falling behind in game one 1-0, the Bucs responded with their own tally in the second frame before a single and three-base error plated three runs for a 4-1 Charleston Southern lead through three innings. Alyssa Henrich was nearly untouchable the first five frames sitting down 13 in order at one point before a hit batter and home run started a Spartan rally.

Game two saw a complete game effort from Brown for the Spartans as the Bucs had their chances with nine runs but couldn't push across a run. All four of Alyssa Heinrich, Annah Junge, Holly Clark and Baylee Eaton saw time in the circle Friday with Henrich tossing 6.2 innings in game one and the trio of Clark, Junge and Eaton tossing 2-plus each in the night cap.

Game 1 | USC Upstate 8, Charleston Southern 6
  • Alyssa Heinrich kept the USC Upstate lineup down for five innings of one-run ball retiring 13-straight batters at one point
  • Charleston Southern did their most damage in the third inning as Brooklyn Brewington reached on an infield single then came all the way around to score on a throwing error for a 4-1 lead
  • USC Upstate would answer though with four in the sixth inning and 5-4 lead before a three-run seventh made it 8-4
  • Back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly brought Charleston Southern back to an 8-6 deficit but the Bucs left the tying run at second in their comeback bid
Game 2 | Charleston Southern, USC Upstate
  • USC Upstate struck first once again with a first-inning run then tacked-on two more on a third-inning home run
  • The Spartans would add two more in the fifth to make it 5-0 where it would stand the rest of the way
  • Charleston Southern posted nine hits to USC Upstate's eight, but were unable to string together a rally to climb back within striking distance
