Bucs fall to Alabama in 2021-22 regular season opener

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Charleston Southern got scoring contributions from six different players Tuesday evening, but Alabama's offense proved to be too much for the Bucs in a 109-32 season-opening loss inside Coleman Coliseum.

Sha'Mya Leigh led the Bucs with nine points, while Alyssia Faye added eight. Sharita Godfrey and Skylar Baltezegar each had a team-leading five rebounds, while Madison Adamson and Victoria Dames had two assists apiece. All 10 Bucs who played recorded multiple rebounds, while five different players had an assist.

Leigh scored each of the Bucs' first seven points and kept CSU within close range early in the contest. A Godfrey 3-pointer in the late stages of the first quarter cut the Buccaneer deficit to 15-10, but that was the last time CSU trailed by single-digits after a Crimson Tide run.

Faye connected on a pair of baskets early in the second quarter to keep the Bucs within distance, but CSU endured a lengthy scoring drought to close the half as Alabama closed on a 20-2 run to take a 46-14 lead into the break.

The Crimson Tide momentum continued into the second half, as the home side scored the first 21 points of the third quarter before a jumper by Faye and a Tori Gittens 3-pointer ended the run. CSU was unable to generate any offensive momentum aside from a late 5-1 run off a Baltezegar three-point play and a pair of free throws by Janaia Fargo, as the Bucs dropped to 0-1 to begin the season.
