Norris Shines in Debut as a Buccaneer; Bucs Drop Two on Opening Day

ORLANDO, FLA. -  According to records on hand, Katelyn Norris became the first freshman in program history to tally three hits in her first appearance as a Buccaneer. The team dropped their opening games on day one of the D9 Citrus Blossom.

BOTTOM OF THE FIRST
  • Brooklynn Brewington records the first hit of the year with a single back to the pitcher
  • Katelyn Norris picks up her first hit and RBI as a Bucs with a stand-up double to right to give the Bucs a one-run lead
 BOTTOM OF THE SECOND
  • Ashlyn Cribb would pick up her first hit at CSU with a line drive to left field.
  • Cribb started her at bat in the hole 0-2 and worked an eight pitch AB before her hit.
  • The Bucs left her stranded after a groundout to short tallied their third out.
BOTTOM OF THE THIRD
  • Norris lays down a bunt to pick up her second hit of the game.
  • Kasinger follows that up with a first-pitch single to right field, her first hit on the year.
  • Sarah Brown reached on a fielder's choice as the Hawks elected to get the lead runner at third. 
  • Bucs couldn't capitalize on the two singles and left two runners stranded.
 TOP OF THE FOURTH
  • Some miscommunication from the Bucs led to a leadoff single for the Hawks that would score on a double in the next at bat. 
  • Kasinger would pick off the runner trying to advance to third. 
  • The Hawks would load the bases on back-to-back singles and CSU would turn to Alyssa Heinrich in the circle where she would force SJU to pop out to Madison Koger.
 BOTTOM OF THE FOURTH
  • Koger gets on with her first hit of the weekend, a single up the middle.
  • Cribb follows it up, laying down a sacrifice bunt to the third baseman to advance Koger to second. 
 TOP OF THE FIFTH
  • The Hawks recorded three base hits before bringing one run across to take a 2-1 lead. 
  • In the inning, Heinrich struck out a pair of batters before forcing SJU to groundout to third for the final out.
BOTTOM OF THE FIFTH
  • Norris again would come up swinging for the Bucs with a single to left field before being caught trying to gain an extra base. 
 BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH
  • The Hawks sealed the victory after the Bucs went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh. 
The Bucs turned around to play Appalachian State and started Junior right hander, Alyssa Heinrich

TOP OF THE SECOND
  • Sarah Brown got things going for the Bucs with a single to right field and advanced to second on a fielding error by the App. State right fielder.
  • Ashlyn Cribb stepped in and executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Brown to third base where she would be left stranded to end the Buccaneer threat. 
 
Little action ensued for the next inning until Appalachian State pulled one run across the plate with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.   
 
BOTTOM OF THE FOURTH
  • The Mountaineers reached base on a single to start off the inning followed by a fielding error by the Bucs to put runners on first and second. 
  • App state would bunt over the runners and attempt a squeeze to bring one home from third.
  • Sarah Brown delivered a perfect flip to Kasinger for the tag out at home and prevent a run. 
  • The next AB for App. State would be an RBI double down the left line to score the runner from third, taking a 2-0 lead.
 BOTTOM OF THE SIXTH
  • A fielding error allowed the Mountaineers to plate one run in the sixth inning after the runner successfully averted a throw home.
  • App. State would bring another insurance run home with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Buccaneers finished the first day of play 0-2 and will return to action tomorrow as they take on Lehigh at 12 PM and Georgia Southern at 5 PM. Both games are available to watch live with a subscription to Flo Softball.
