Bucs unable to keep pace with hot-shooting Blue Hose in Big South play

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Presbyterian utilized a double-digit point swing early in the second quarter to top host Charleston Southern on Tuesday night inside the Buccaneer Field House, 67-46.

The Bucs (3-16, 1-9 Big South) traded baskets with the Blue Hose (7-12, 3-7 Big South) early as the teams swapped the lead five times over the first 10 minutes of play. However, PC opened the second quarter with a 14-0 run to cap a larger 21-2 stretch as the Blue Hose pulled away from the Bucs at the half.

CSU attempted to fight their way back into the contest behind Tierra Steede's third double-double of the season as the senior forward posted 12 points and 11 rebounds over 24 minutes of action. The Bucs were unable to cut the final margin back within 20 the rest of the way in falling in the conference hmoe matchup.

Steede was the lone Buc in double-digits with 12 points, while her 11 rebounds paced all players on the court. Sharita Godfrey added eight points and two steals, while Tori Gittens chipped in nine points and an assist off the bench.

Jade Compton, Kacie Hall, and Trinity Johnson scored 11 points apiece for PC to lead the Blue Hose scoring efforts on Tuesday night. Alessia Capley was the rebounding leader with eight, while Johnson added eight assists and two steals in the PC win.
 
First Quarter: Presbyterian 18, Charleston Southern 11
The Bucs scored the first four points of the contest with Godfrey and Steede scoring back-to-back buckets in the paint to open the contest. The Blue Hose responded with a Johnson three-pointer and a Tionna Carter layup to put PC in the lead for the first time in the contest. Steede led the Bucs with five points and a trio of rebounds in the first quarter, but PC utilized a Hall three-pointer to end the frame on a 7-2 run in building the early lead.

Second Quarter: Presbyterian 44, Charleston Southern 17
The Blue Hose scored the first 14 points of the second quarter on their way to opening the game up midway through the first half. Compton scored nine points in the frame, including a three-pointer that put PC ahead 37-13 at the 2:52 mark in the second quarter. Johnson put the margin at 27 at the half with a three-point play.

Third Quarter: Presbyterian 53, Charleston Southern 29
PC's lead reached 30 on Johnson's three-pointer at the 8:24 mark as the Blue Hose went ahead 47-17 early in the second half. Maya Richards put the Bucs on the scoreboard with a layup and Carmella Walker followed up with a jumper to force a PC timeout. The Bucs closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run with Steede connecting on back-to-back shots inside the paint, while Gittens scored on the fast-break to cut the Blue Hose lead down to 24.

Fourth Quarter: Presbyterian 67, Charleston Southern 46
CSU pulled the game to within 20 at the 4:04 mark following a Sha'Mya Leigh jumper as the Bucs narrowed the gap down to 60-40. However, that was as close as the Bucs were able to get as Riley Hemm connected on a late three-pointer to end CSU's comeback hopes.

  • Charleston Southern shot 31.7% (19-of-60) from the floor, 8.3% (1-of-12) from the three-point line, and 53.8% (7-of-13) from the free throw line in the loss.
  • Presbyterian shot 52.1% (25-of-48) from the field, 50.0% (11-of-22) from behind the arc, and 40.0% (6-of-15) from the free throw line in the win.
  • The Bucs outscored the Blue Hose 13-12 in second-chance points and 6-4 on fast-break opportunities.
  • PC held the 20-9 scoring advantage off turnovers and the 17-15 edge on points off the bench.
  • The Bucs held the 24-22 edge in scoring in the paint.

  • Tierra Steede's double-double was her team-leading third of the season as the senior forward posted 12 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Steede also marked the second consecutive game for the Bucs with a double-double as Sharita Godfrey recorded a 16-point, 11-rebound performance this past Saturday against Winthrop.
  • CSU was two off their season-low for turnovers in a game with 11 on the evening against the Blue Hose.
  • The Bucs have recorded at least seven steals in each of the last three games.
