WBB Preview | Bucs back on the road as they make Friday trip to UNC

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern hits the road for the second time this season as the Buccaneers make the trip to Chapel Hill, N.C. and Carmichael Arena for a Friday night matchup at the University of North Carolina. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Tar Heels is set for 5 p.m. on the ACC Network Extra.

CSU Women's Basketball Game Notes - at North Carolina

CSU makes their third trip to North Carolina in the Fred Applin coaching era this season. The Bucs had previous headed up I-95 in both the 2013 and 2016 seasons, but UNC held off CSU on both occasions.

In their last matchup back in November 2016, the Bucs fought to the finish against the Tar Heels before succumbing, 93-77. Breannah Bretches scored 21 points in the game, while three other Bucs hit double-digits in the loss to the Tar Heels. In the only other contest between the teams in the Applin coaching era, UNC utilized a 15-0 run early in the second half to post the 100-49 win back in 2013.

The Bucs continue their competition against ACC opponents this season as CSU opened the 2019-20 year against Florida State back on November 5. In the season opener, CSU was unable to battle back from an early FSU first quarter lead on their way to dropping the 88-36 contest to the host Seminoles.

Carmella Walker and Sharita Godfrey have been CSU's primary scoring options in the early part of the 2019-20 season as the duo are both averaging double-digits for the Bucs. Walker (12.5) is coming off an 18-point performance in the overtime loss against South Carolina State, while Godrey led CSU's scoring efforts in the opener against the Seminoles.

Godfrey and Walker also double as CSU's rebounding leaders early in the season. Godfrey holds the edge with 6.5 rebounds per game, including a career-high nine rebounds against South Carolina State. Walker (6.0) added eight rebounds in the loss against the Bulldogs.

CSU has welcomed a mostly new lineup to the floor this season following a six-member graduation class this past summer. So far in 2019, the Bucs have played six different newcomers among the 10 players to see playing time for CSU this season. Walker and freshmen Tyra Wright, Sha'Mya Leigh, and Tori Gittens have joined Godrey in the starting lineup this season over the first two games.

The Bucs are looking to bounce back from a tough overtime loss this past Saturday against S.C. State in CSU's home opener. The Bulldogs hit several key free throws in the overtime period as the Buccaneers fell in their home opener, 81-75.

The game against the Tar Heels is the final game of an unusual opening stretch for the Buccaneers to start the year. After lining up in three games in the first 10 days of the season, CSU takes an 11-day hiatus before returning home to the Buc Dome with a November 26 game against Bethune-Cookman.

Head Coach Fred Applin has a tie to North Carolina as he made his coaching debut at UNC as an assistant coach from 1989-93.
