Miller homers twice, Andronica grand slam power Bucs to series win over UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Aaron Miller homered twice and Alex Andronica connected on his first collegiate grand slam as Charleston Southern powered past host UNC Asheville at Greenwood Field on Saturday afternoon, 19-3.

Miller connected on a three-run home run in the top of the second inning, and then the freshman first baseman added a grand slam in the top of the sixth to finish with a game-high eight RBI in the contest. Miller finished the day 3-for-4 from the plate with four runs scored.

Andronica and Brandon Gragilla provided the fireworks from the plate in the Bucs' nine run seventh inning as Andronica connected on a grand slam five batters into the frame. Four batters later, Gragilla connected on a three-run shot to add to the Bucs' (16-13, 5-6) lead as CSU ran away with the contest on Saturday afternoon.

Nate Blanchard, Jason Miller, Kyle Vesnesky, and Alex Andronica all recorded multi-hit games, while Aaron Miller, Blanchard, Chris Singleton, Cody Smith, and Andronica all scored multiple times in the contest.

Cody Maw (2-2) was the recipient of the Bucs' offensive output going two scoreless innings in relief. Kyle Dyson picked up the no-decision after going the first four innings while striking out seven, while Ryan Stoudemire, Tyler Pickard, and Seth Owens closed out the game for the Bucs.

Greg Gasparro (2-2) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs (12-18, 3-5) allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out six over five innings' work.

Aaron Miller and Michael Sconzo put the Bucs ahead 2-0 in the top of the first with Miller driving in Nate Blanchard with an RBI single, while Sconzo connected on a sacrifice fly playing Miller to give CSU the early lead.

The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the frame on Brandon Lankford's two-run single scoring Joe Tietjen and Kyle Carruthers to even the score.

Miller struck for the first time in the top of the second with the freshman drilling the first pitch of the at-bat over the fence in left center scoring Cody Smith and Chris Singleton to give CSU the 5-2 lead.

The Bucs added to their lead in the top of the fourth as Blanchard singled in Andronica to give CSU the 6-2 advantage.

Tietjen responded for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single scoring Carmine Pagano.

Miller's grand slam put the Bucs ahead 10-3 in the top of the sixth with his shot to left field bringing home Blanchard, Smith, and Singleton.

The Bucs sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh with Andronica and Gragilla both connecting on home runs during the frame in CSU's biggest inning of the season. Kyle Vesnesky added a pair of RBI doubles in the frame bringing home first Sconzo, and then Jack DeLongchamps to provide the final margin.

Maw, Pickard, and Owens faced the minimum over Asheville's final three innings to close out the contest.
