Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - High Point utilized an 11-3 run midway through the fourth quarter to pull away from the Buccaneers late as Charleston Southern fell on Senior Day in the Buc Dome on Saturday afternoon, 78-72.
Monique Maximilien capped her career in the Buc Dome with her fifth double-double of the season with the Coconut Creek, Fla. native leading the Bucs with 13 points and 16 rebounds in the contest against the Panthers. However, HPU's Emma Bockrath scored 10 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter to help High Point split the season series against the Buccaneers with the win.
Charleston Southern falls to 13-15, 8-11 in Big South Conference play with the loss, while High Point improves to 11-16, 10-8 in conference play with the win. CSU closes out the 2015-16 regular season on the road on Tuesday night in Asheville, N.C., taking on UNC Asheville. Tipoff on the Big South Network is set for 7 p.m.
Maximilien had arguably one of the best games of her collegiate career in her final game in the Buc Dome as the senior center was one of four players with double-digits scoring in the game. She went 4-for-8 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free throw line and led the team with two blocked shots and a pair of steals in a team-high 37 minutes.
Shauntavia Dobson sparked the Bucs off the bench in the first quarter in finishing with 13 points. She connected on a trio of three-pointers in the first half to give CSU the 27-19 lead with 8:51 in the second quarter for their largest lead of the game.
Ke'Asia Jackson added 13 points off the bench for the Bucs as CSU outscored High Point 34-16 in bench points on the afternoon. She added a team-high four assists from the floor. Rachel Burns was also in double-digits with 11 points and five rebounds.
Bockrath led three Panthers in double-digits with 26 points, hitting 8-of-13 from the floor and all four of her three-point attempts in the win. Kaylah Keys added 18 points and four steals, while Kat Harris had 14 points and three assists in the win.
Keys opened the scoring in the first quarter with a three-pointer on HPU's opening possession and Bockrath connected on her first three-pointer of the game at the 4:29 mark to give the Panthers the 10-9 lead midway through the first quarter. The Bucs responded with their bench play as Jackson and Dobson both connected on three's late in the quarter to give CSU the 19-13 lead. Dobson added a jumper before the break as CSU led 21-17 after the first quarter.
Dobson continued to have the hot hand early in the second quarter with the sophomore guard connecting on her first two shots from behind the arc to give the Bucs the 27-19 lead with 8:51 left in the first half. High Point responded with a 10-0 run spanning the next four minutes with Bockrath putting the Panthers up 29-27 with a free throw at the 4:10 mark. The Panthers closed out the half from the free throw line hitting their last six shots from the stripe to take a 39-33 lead at the break.
The Panthers' lead reached nine following three free throws by Harris at the 7:11 mark in the third quarter before CSU rallied back. The Bucs utilized a 10-3 run to narrow the margin down to two points following a pair of Brianna Lakes' free throws.
Alyssa Mann cut it down to one on her second three-pointer of the half that the 3:17 mark as CSU trailed 51-50 before the Panthers rallied late in the quarter. High Point led 61-54 following a Keys' layup in the final minutes before Maximilien connected on a late layup and free throw to send the teams into the fourth quarter with the Bucs trailing 61-57.
CSU tied the game up at 63-63 with 7:28 remaining on Jackson's jumper before Bockrath went off for High Point. She went on a personal 10-2 run to give HPU the 73-65 lead with 3:13 remaining, connecting on a pair of three-pointers during the stretch. Mann connected on her third three-pointer of the game as the Bucs mounted one final rally and Jackson added a jumper to pull CSU within three at 75-72 before the Panthers closed out the game from the free throw line.
