Bucs topped by late Radford push on Saturday afternoon

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to hold off a fourth quarter Radford comeback in the Buc Dome on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers fell to the Highlanders in Big South Conference action, 61-50.

The Bucs (11-13, 6-9) held a 45-39 lead early in the fourth quarter following an Alyssa Mann steal and layup before the Radford comeback began. The Highlanders were sparked by five points by Janayla White during a 13-0 run that spanned nearly six minutes as Radford closed out the game with 22 of the final 27 points of the contest in the win.

CSU's defensive pressure caused a number of problems for the Highlanders early as CSU forced 26 Radford turnovers, turning them into 17 points in the contest. Radford won the battle of the boards with a 47-33 rebounding edge with Lydia Rivers, White, and Jayda Worthy all recording 10 rebounds apiece in outscoring the Bucs 17-9 in second chance points.

"Rebounding was a big factor today," said CSU head coach Fred Applin. "It was a very good game; we competed very well and had good fight today. We've got to finish what we started."

Mann was in double-digits to pace the Bucs' scoring efforts in the game as the senior guard finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Junior forward Elyse Kiploks had 10 rebounds and three steals in the contest to lead the Bucs in both categories.

CSU continues Big South play on Tuesday night as the Bucs travel to Conway, S.C. and Coastal Carolina for a midweek matchup in The HTC Center. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Chanticleers on the Big South Network is set for 7 p.m.

"It's going to be a good game against CCU," said Applin. "We played each other earlier in the year and it was a close game. We've got to rebound and execute, and that will be something we work on a practice this week."

Radford opened up with the first four points of the game behind a pair of Gaby Gilmore free throws and a White layup to take the early lead less than a minute into play. The Bucs responded with a 17-2 run to close out the quarter sparked by Mann's seven points and four points from Alecia Hardy off the bench to take the double-digit 17-6 lead into the second quarter.

The lead remained double-digits throughout the half with CSU going up by as many as 15 on two separate occasions. The Bucs went up 23-8 following a Hardy three-pointer at the 7:22 mark, while Rachel Burns' steal and layup at the 4:08 mark gave the Bucs the 28-13 advantage. Radford rallied back just before the break from the free throw line with Rachel Ross and Worthy both sinking a pair from the charity stripe to give CSU the 31-21 halftime lead.

Gilmore's three to open the second half narrowed the CSU lead down to seven at the 8:55 mark, but back-to-back layups by Monique Maximilien and Burns stretched the Bucs' advantage back to double-digits. Radford used a 7-0 run midway through the quarter to pull back within 37-33 with 5:51 remaining and the teams remained within two possessions heading into the fourth quarter.

The Highlanders took control of the game at the 8:52 mark in the fourth quarter following the White layup on their way to building a late double-digit lead. Georgia Elliott-King drilled a three-pointer for the Bucs late in the quarter, but it was not enough to mount a comeback as CSU fell, 61-50.

White led the Highlanders with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Worthy also recorded the double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Gilmore was also in double-digits with 10 points, adding four assists and four steals.
