CHARLESTON, S.C. - Alyssa Mann scored 20 points for the sixth time in the 2015-16 season and Ke'Asia Jackson was in double-digits for the fifth straight game as Charleston Southern topped Campbell, 65-57, in the Buc Dome on Tuesday night.
The Buccaneers' win snapped a four game losing streak and improved CSU's record to 9-10, 4-6 in Big South Conference play on the season. The difference in the game came in the turnover battle as CSU forced 21 Campbell (7-12, 2-8) turnovers and turned them into a 20-7 edge in points off of turnovers in picking up the conference win.
"We really played as a team tonight," said CSU head coach Fred Applin. "We need to make sure we really get after those 50-50 balls and rebounded well."
Early in the contest the Bucs were paced by their senior duo of Mann and Maximilien with both players finishing the game with double-digits in the scoring column. Mann connected on a career-high five three-pointers in the game to finish with a game-high 20 points in the contest, while Maximilien finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocked to pace the Bucs.
"Our seniors were really key for us," commented Applin. "Mo (Maximilien) was great inside and we need to keep getting her touches in the post. She has got to touch that basketball and kick it out to our shooters. Alyssa really sets us up on offense and really sparks us. We have a whole bunch of young players. Right now, our rotation and the flow of the games have helped those younger players out."
Jackson paced the Bucs late from the free throw line. The freshman guard connected on 8-of-10 attempt from the charity stripe to finish the game with 14 points, 10 coming in the fourth quarter as the Bucs outscored the Camels 20-10 over the final 10 minutes in pulling away for the win.
The Bucs open up the second half of their 2015-16 Big South schedule on Saturday afternoon at Winthrop with the game to be streamed on ESPN3.
"We need to take the momentum that we played with here tonight and carry it over to Saturday," Applin said. "We need to play the same way and just really hustle. The keys to our success won't change. We beat Winthrop here at home to open up Big South play, but they are a different team than they were then. Winthrop is scrappy. They crash the boards really well and have good shooters. We're going to have to play smart and give a great effort if we are going to win there."
Tipoff for the Bucs and the Eagles is set for 1 p.m. in the Winthrop Coliseum.
Mann and Maximilien started out hot for the Buccaneers in the first quarter with the senior duo both scoring six points apiece over the first 10 minutes. The Bucs lead reached 11-2 at the 6:33 mark on Mann's first three-pointer of the game, but the Camels were able to rally back to tie the game up four minutes later on a Summer Price three. The Bucs held the 19-18 lead at the end of the quarter as Alecia Hardy sank a pair of free throws to end the period.
Campbell scored the first four points of the second quarter to build their largest lead of the first half at 22-19 on a Price layup off the Jessica Pone steal. The Bucs answered with a layup from Brianna Lakes and Mann's third three-pointer of the game to take the 24-22 lead with 7:51 left in the frame. CSU's lead reached eight at 35-27 late in the second quarter on a Maximilien layup as the Bucs went into the half leading the Camels 37-31.
The third quarter was all Campbell as the Camels outscored the Bucs 16-8 in the frame led by six points by Amanda Coffer. Coffer's three-pointer to open the quarter set the tone as Campbell opened with a 12-2 run in building a 43-39 lead on the RaeChaun Edwards' layup at the 6:17 mark. The margin remained the same late following a Tiffany Daniel jumper in the final minute before Jackson connected on a jumper for the Bucs to end the quarter with CSU trailing 47-45.
Foul trouble plagued the Camels late in the game and the Bucs took advantage from the free throw line, sinking seven attempts with Jackson going 6-of-8 from the stripe in securing the CSU win.
Edwards led the Camels with 14 points and nine assists from the floor, while Coffer finished with 10 points and two blocked shots despite battling foul trouble through most of the game. Price and Qua Brown added seven points and six rebounds apiece off the bench for Campbell.
