Bucs' home win streak ends on Saturday afternoon to Presbyterian

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to overcome a 22-0 run by the Blue Hose on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers fell for the first time in the Buc Dome in the 2015-16 season, 63-49.

The Bucs (7-6, 2-2) opened the game with the first four points of the contest on a pair of Monique Maximilien baskets in the paint. PC (7-6, 3-1) answered with 22 straight points with seven different players scoring during the stretch to take a double-digit lead the Blue Hose would hold throughout a majority of the game.

CSU was able to bring the game back to within single digits on several occasions late in the contest behind full court defensive pressure by Alecia Hardy and a pair of three-pointers from Shauntavia Dobson, but it was not enough to put the Bucs back in the game as CSU fell at home.

"We started out well in that first minute and then we just kind of went flat the rest of that period," said CSU head coach Fred Applin. "We didn't shoot the ball very well. We're better shooters than that and I think we showed that the rest of the game. We knew coming in that this was going to be a tough game, but they fought hard all game and never gave up."

Maximilien led the Bucs with nine points and five rebounds as the senior center went 4-for-4 from the floor in the contest. Nayla Long, Dobson and Hardy all finished with eight points apiece for the Bucs in the loss.

Taylor Petty led the Blue Hose with 16 points off the bench, while Cortney Storey finished the game with 16 points and six assists as PC picked up their fourth win in a row. Janie Miles added 10 points in the Blue Hose win.

Maximilien opened the game with back-to-back baskets leading to an early PC timeout as the Bucs jumped ahead with a 4-0 lead over the first minute of the contest. From there, it was all Blue Hose in the first quarter as PC went on a 22-0 run before Rachel Burns connected on a short jumper to send the teams into the second quarter with CSU trailing 22-6.

The PC lead reached 21 with 6:56 remaining in the second quarter before Hardy sparked a defensive effort with a steal and layup. Elyse Kiploks had five rebounds over the quarter for the Bucs as CSU scored the final seven points of the half with Breanna Saunders scoring five during the stretch to send the teams into the break trailing 35-19.

Alyssa Mann broke a scoreless first half with a three-pointer from the left corner to narrow the margin down to 15 with 6:20 remaining in the third quarter. Hardy followed up with another steal and layup as the Bucs outscored PC 20-13 over the frame. The Bucs cut the margin down to nine points at the buzzer as Dobson collected the offensive rebound and sank the eight-footer from the right baseline to send the teams into the fourth quarter with the Bucs trailing 48-39.

Twice the Bucs cut the margin down to eight points on Dobson three-pointers early in the quarter, but the Blue Hose lead reached double-digits on a Miles' layup at the 7:44 mark on their way to closing out the Big South win.

Charleston Southern has a short turnaround time as the Bucs hit the road on Monday night in the Millis Center as CSU takes on High Point in Big South Conference play. Tipoff on the Big South Network is set for 7 p.m.
