Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell used an early second half run to pull away from visiting Charleston Southern on Thursday night as the Buccaneers fell on the road inside Gore Arena in Big South Conference play, 61-47.
CSU was able to use a 9-0 run to bring the game back to within two possessions of the Camels with 6:27 remaining as Alise Karlsone scored four straight points for the Bucs. However, Campbell's 10-0 run early in the period helped the Camels pull away and the hosts used a 10-1 run to close out the game as the Bucs fell for the second time to the Camels this season.
Alyssa Mann led the way for the Bucs with a game-high 15 points, while Nayla Long had a career-high 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench. CSU shot 28.3% from the floor as a team as Karlsone joined the Bucs sophomore duo with 10 points and six rebounds in the contest.
RaeChaun Edwards led four Camels in double-digits with 15 points, while Kiera Gaines had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Summer Leverette narrowly missed out on a double-double of her own with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Juli Osborne had 11 points as Campbell shot 39.3% from the floor in the game.
Both teams were even in the rebounding battle at 42-42, but Campbell made up the difference in the paint outscoring the Bucs 28-10.
A slow-paced first half saw the Camels build a 19-10 lead with 9:15 on the clock following an Osborne layup. The Bucs battled back into the half late from the three-point line as Karlsone connected on back-to-back triples and Mann added a three-pointer to put the score at 24-21 with 2:26.
Edwards hit back-to-back free throws to stretch the lead back out to five, but Long connected on a running jumper in the paint on the following CSU possession to put the score back to three. Gaines hit a layup just before the buzzer to send the teams into the break with Campbell leading 26-21.
Long continued her scoring streak to open the second half scoring five of the first seven CSU points as the Bucs kept the game close at 37-31 with 16:16 to play. Osborne answered with a layup on the other end for the Camels as Campbell went on a 10-0 run sparked by a pair of three-pointers by Coffer and Edwards to push the hosts to a game-high 16 point lead at the 13:47 mark.
The Bucs responded with a 9-0 run started by Marley Brown's first three-pointer of the game, while Karlsone scored four straight to pull the Bucs back to within five at 49-44. After Coffer and Long traded jumpers, the Camels pulled away late in keeping CSU scoreless from the floor over the final 5:30 giving up only a Long free throw at the 1:12 mark in closing out the win.
Charleston Southern is back in action on Saturday night as CSU travels to High Point University and the Millis Center in Big South Conference play. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Panthers is set for 7 p.m.
