Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern recognized their 2014-15 seniors prior to their Saturday afternoon tipoff against Longwood and nearly gave them the victory as the Buccaneers late rally against the Lancers came up just short in the Bucs 58-51 loss.
Tatum Jarvis led the way for the Bucs with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Monique Maximilien had 11 rebounds and displayed some tough interior defense as the Bucs held the 43-35 rebounding margin, but 17 turnovers led to 11 Lancers points and that made the difference as CSU fell in their regular season finale.
Alise Karlsone connected on a deep three-pointer and added six rebounds and a blocked shot in her final game inside the Buc Dome as CSU went ahead late before Longwood closed out the contest on a 13-4 run in sweeping the season series.
Alyssa Mann and Shauntavia Dobson finished the contest with eight points apiece for the Bucs as CSU shot 35.6% from the floor, 31.8% from behind the arc against the Lancers in their final tune-up before next weekend's Big South Championships.
The first half went back and forth between the Bucs and Lancers with the teams swapping the lead six times while tying up on three occasions.
CSU held their largest lead of the opening period with 5:20 remaining as Maximilien bulled her way in for the rebound and put-back to put the Bucs ahead 20-15. Longwood responded however by closing out the half with 10 of the last 12 points to take the 25-22 lead into the break.
Neither team was able to build more than a six-point lead in the second half with Longwood going up by the margin twice, following a Kyndal Skersick three-pointer at the 11:26 mark, and an Autumn Childress layup at the 10:46 mark.
The Bucs closed it back following the Childress layup with a 7-0 run to take the lead as Nayla Long hit a turnaround jumper in the paint and Karlsone drained the deep three to fuel the stretch.
CSU held their final lead of the contest at the 3:15 mark as Jarvis drove in for the layup, but Micaela Ellis followed with a three-pointer for the Lancers on the other end as Longwood closed out the game with the 13-4 run.
CSU awaits the release of the 2015 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championships bracket, but is projected to play on the tournament's opening day (Tuesday) next week at The HTC Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
