Bucs drop Monday night matchup at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. - Charleston Southern was unable to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit as the Buccaneers' second half comeback attempt fell short on Monday night as CSU fell on the road at Georgia Southern, 64-51.

Alyssa Mann led the Bucs (5-4) with 14 points, hitting four three-pointers in the loss. Nayla Long was also in double-digits for the first time this season with 10 points, while Monique Maximilien finished the contest with her sixth double-digit rebounding effort with 10 boards on the night.

Georgia Southern (3-3) was paced by Patrice Butler's 25 points and eight rebounds in the game, while Angel McGowen added 17 points and five steals as the Eagles shot 44.9% as a team from the floor in the win.

Rachel Burns and Mann both connected on three-pointers in the first quarter as the Bucs trailed 14-10 following the first 10 minutes. Dobson added a jumper just before the break as four different players scored for CSU in the period.

The Eagles stretched their lead to double-digits before the break, going up 13 at 32-19 with 2:19 remaining on the Butler three-pointer. Neither team was able to score before the half as the teams went into the half with the Bucs trailing by 13.

CSU scored six straight points out of the half with Long sparking the run with a layup at the 8:36 mark, while Dobson connected on a three-pointer to pull the Bucs back within 32-25. The Bucs cut it back to within five at 34-29 following a Maximilien layup midway through the quarter and down to six on a Hardy layup with 44 seconds remaining.

However, that was as close as the Bucs were able to bring the matchup as the Eagles closed out the contest from the free throw line in completing the win.

Charleston Southern remains on the road on Friday afternoon as the Buccaneers travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the University of Virginia. Tipoff in John Paul Jones Arena is set for 7 p.m.
