Buccaneers tripped up by Chanticleers on Thursday night

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern saw an early double-digit lead erased in the first half and a late rally fell short as the Buccaneers fell in Big South action to host Coastal Carolina on Thursday evening inside The HTC Center, 85-70.

CSU raced out to the quick lead, using a 15-4 run in going up double-digits over Coastal Carolina as the Buccaneers held the 22-12 lead with 9:45 to play. However, the Chants rebounded and responded, going on a 27-5 run over the next three minutes in taking a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way in closing out the season sweep over the Buccaneers.

Tatum Jarvis finished the night in leading all scorers with 19 points, while Anicia Dotson added 17 points from the floor as the Buccaneers shot 48.3 percent as a team in the contest. Rochelle Brophy added nine points and seven rebounds in the contest, while Marley Brown finished with eight points and a steal as CSU battled to cut the Chants lead down to within single digits before the halftime break.

Coastal Carolina had four players in double-digits on the night led by AJ Jordan's 17 points and seven rebounds. Angelica Henry added 13 points and six assists, while Alexx Puckett (12 points) and Karsen Sims (10 points) were also in double-digits for the Chants. Coastal shot 50.0 percent as a team and held the 42-31 rebounding advantage on the glass over the Bucs.

Charleston Southern falls to 8-19, 4-14 in Big South play with the loss, while Coastal Carolina improves to 12-14, 8-9 in conference action with the victory.

With Coastal Carolina holding the narrow 8-5 lead following a layup on the fast break by Angelica Henry, Charleston Southern went on a 15-4 run in building their largest lead of the contest. Anicia Dotson jumpstarted the stretch with a jumper and Erin Bratcher followed with her first three-pointer of the game to put the Bucs ahead 10-8 with 16:26 to play in the first half. Five different CSU players scored during the stretch with Dotson accounting for eight of the points before Nayla Long capped off the run with a pair of free throws to put the Bucs ahead 22-12 with 9:45 on the clock.

Sims provided Coastal Carolina's answer, connecting on back-to-back three-pointers and Henry followed with a layup as the Chants scored eight straight points before a jumper by Jarvis ended the first spurt at the 7:17 mark with the Bucs holding the 24-20 lead. CCU continued their run as Megan Pittman connected on a three-pointer and Jordan helped the Chants retake the lead with seven straight points as the Chants started to pull away in the half. Olivia Carlton connected on a triple during the stretch as CCU went up by as many as 12 points in the half in building a 39-27 lead at the 2:54 mark.

The Bucs responded with one final run before the end of the half, going on an 11-2 stretch over the final two minutes as Jarvis and Brophy combining for nine points before Brown connected on the short jumper inside the paint to pull the Bucs within three at 41-38 with 1:33 on the clock. Cook ended the half for the Chants with a three-pointer from the top of the key right before the buzzer to send the teams into the break with Charleston Southern trailing 44-38.

A Brophy layup started the second half for the Buccaneers, but Jena Hamrick followed with one of nine CCU three-pointers of the contest to extend the Coastal Carolina lead. The Chants quickly rebuilt their double-digit lead in going up 55-45 with 15:11 to play following a Puckett layup.

Charleston Southern battled back, cutting the deficit down to seven on two occasions in the second half as Kirklin Kirkpatrick connected on a triple and Brown made a pair of free throws at the 10:22 mark to put the score at 61-54. Dotson put the margin back at seven in answering a Henry jumper with one of her own, but CCU responded with a final 11-2 run in building a commanding 74-58 lead with 5:36 to play on a Henry three-pointer.

Dotson scored five consecutive points in a final gasp for the Bucs, but CSU was unable to crack the double-digit advantage the rest of the way as the Chants closed out the 85-70 victory.

The Buccaneers return to the road next weekend for their final trip of the 2013-14 regular season, traveling to Presbyterian on February 27th and Gardner-Webb on March 1st. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Blue Hose next Thursday is set for 7 p.m.
