Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern's late comeback attempt was not enough for the Buccaneers to overcome the visiting Camels on Saturday afternoon as Campbell held off CSU from the free throw line in the 69-65 Big South Conference matchup.
Alecia Hardy and Tatum Jarvis combined for back-to-back three-pointers for the Bucs as CSU connected on nine of their final 11 shots from the floor to lead a furious comeback spanning the final 10 minutes of the game. The Bucs overcame a double-digit Campbell lead to take the 59-57 advantage with 3:17 remaining in the contest on a jumper by Monique Maximilien from the free throw line.
The jumper gave CSU their first lead since the 6:20 mark in the first half as the Bucs rallied from a 46-36 deficit behind 10 second half points by Jarvis and nine points from Shauntavia Dobson to take the lead with 3:17 remaining in the game.
The Camels hit eight of their final 10 attempts from the free throw line and RaeChaun Edwards recorded a steal and fast break layup to put Campbell back on top. Three-pointers by Hardy with 58 seconds left and Jarvis with 13 seconds remaining kept the Bucs within one point on two separate occasions, but free throws by Summer Leverette and Kiera Gaines helped Campbell hold off CSU for the Big South win.
CSU falls to 2-5 overall on the season with the loss, 0-2 in Big South play, while Campbell improves to 4-3, 1-1 in conference action on the year.
Jarvis led the Bucs with a season-high 21 points as the sophomore forward matched her season total with four three-pointers in the contest to pace CSU.
"I'm proud of the effort and the way players stepped up today," CSU head coach Fred Applin commented. "(Tatum) Jarrvis really stepped up today and our freshmen really stepped up. (Shauntavia) Dobson made some big plays today. They are buying in to what we are doing and it shows."
The Bucs shot 42.6 percent from the floor, 47.6 from behind the arc in the loss as Dobson (13) and Natasha Lebedeva (10) were also in double-digits for CSU in the scoring column.
"I thought our shot selection was a lot better today," Applin said. "It's about taking the best shot on every possession. We got better today. It may not have shown on the score board today, but we have gotten better. We have to just continue to work on the little things and keep getting better."
Campbell had three players in double-digits on the afternoon led by Gaines' 17 points and 12 rebounds as the senior forward recorded the double-double. Amanda Coffer added 12 points and five rebounds, while Edwards had 12 points, six assists and eight steals in the Camels win.
The game went back and forth throughout the first half as the teams traded the lead five teams before Campbell utilized full-court pressure to shut down the CSU offense late for a four minute span. With the Bucs leading 22-20 with 6:02 remaining in the first half following a Jarvis jumper, the Camels went on an 8-0 run spanning the next 5:19 to take a 28-22 lead.
Dobson broke the streak with a running jumper with 43 seconds to pull the Bucs back within four, and the CSU freshman connected on a shot from just inside the three-point line at the top of the key with four seconds remaining in the half to put the score at 30-26 heading into the halftime break.
Campbell kept control of the contest in the second half, going up by as many as many as 10 points with 11:29 remaining in the game as MaKala Rouse took the steal and drove the distance for the layup to put the Camels ahead 46-36.
CSU started to cut into the Campbell lead as Lebedeva hit the jumper from the free throw line and Dobson followed with the first of two three-point attempts to pull the Bucs back to within five points at 46-41 with 8:40 remaining. Jarvis and Brianna Lakes both added baskets before Dobson's second triple of the half cut the score down to two points at 50-48 two minutes later.
Alyssa Mann followed with her first three-pointer of the contest from the top of the key with 5:21 remaining in the second half to cut the margin down to one at 54-53 leading to the final five minutes of the contest.
Campbell won the battle of the boards in the game with the 42-30 edge on the glass behind Gaines' 12 rebounds. The Camels also led the way on the defensive end with 23 steals on 30 CSU turnovers in the game. The Bucs bench, led by Lebedeva, Jarvis and Dobson, outscored Campbell 49-19.
CSU is back in action this week at home inside the Buc Dome as the Bucs host Montreat in non-conference action on Tuesday night. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Cavaliers is set for 5 p.m.
