Karlsone with a career-high 23 points in Bucs loss to Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Charleston Southern held the lead throughout a majority of the first half before a late Florida run before the break put the game in the hands of the Gators as the Buccaneers fell on Tuesday night inside the Stephen O'Connell Center to Florida, 92-64.

Alise Karlsone scored a career-high 23 points 9-of-15 shooting from the floor and added five three-pointers on the night to pace the CSU offense as the Bucs bounced back from their lowest offensive output of the season  by shooting 41.8 percent as a team from the floor. Tatum Jarvis added 18 points, going 6-of-7 from the free throw line and drilled a pair of three-pointers as the Bucs fell for the second time this season.

Florida had five players in double-digits led by Haley Lorenzen and Cassie Peoples' 17 points apiece. Brooke Copeland added 15 points, while January Miller (11) and Kayla Lewis (10) were also in double-digits on the night. Carlie Needles filled the statistics sheet for the Gators with seven points, seven steals, 14 rebounds and five assists as Florida shot 43.8 percent as a team from the floor.

CSU falls to 2-2 overall on the season with the loss, while Florida improves to 3-1 overall in the 2014-15 season.

The Bucs took control of the game early in the first half behind the hot hand of Karlsone as the Saldus, Latvia native scored 11 of her game-high 23 points during the half. With CSU trailing 10-7, Karlsone went on a personal 8-0 run over the next three CSU possessions, hitting a pair of three-pointers and a put-back layup to give the Bucs the 15-10 lead with 10:33 remaining in the half.

Karlsone's rebound and put-back at the 11:04 mark gave CSU a lead they would hold for the next five minutes as the Bucs advantage remained at five points at 17-12 following the Marley Brown layup.

Miller cut into the CSU score with seven straight points to put the Gators back in the least at 19-17 with 6:11 remaining as Florida went on a 26-4 run to close out the half and take a 43-21 lead into the half.

The Gators lead reached 28 early in the second half on a jumper by Miller as Florida scored the first six points of the break before Jarvis put the Bucs on the board with a pair of free throws at the 17:25 mark. CSU managed to bring the game down to within 16 at 59-43 on a Monique Maximilien layup, and Alecia Hardy connected on a three-pointer with 9:27 remaining to put the score at 62-46.

CSU continued to keep the game within reach at 16 points as Karlsone drilled a three-pointer with 7:29 remaining, but the Gators took control of the game late in closing out the non-conference win.

Jarvis and Karlsone had five rebounds apiece for the Bucs, while Alyssa Mann and Hardy had three assists apiece. Karlsone and Maximilien paced the CSU efforts with two steals apiece in the loss.

Charleston Southern remains on the road as the Bucs travel to Asheville, N.C. on Monday evening to open Big South Conference play at UNC Asheville. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Bulldogs inside Kimmel Arena is set for 7 p.m. on the Big South Network.
