Buccaneers fall to Lancers second half run, 78-71

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to hold off a dominant late run by visiting Longwood on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers fell in Big South play to the Lancers, 78-71.

The Buccaneers scored the first 10 points of the game and held a double-digit lead throughout a majority of the contest against the Lancers, boasting an 11 point lead at 68-57 with 6:03 remaining on a Monique Maximilien jumper. Longwood closed out the contest though on a 21-3 run, holding the Buccaneers scoreless from the field following Maximilien's basket in coming back for the win.

"We've just got to continue to build," Applin said following the loss. "This is a game that we could have won. We'll just have to look at the tape and do what we have to do. We aren't guarding like we are supposed to guard. We are just going to have to get back at it and work hard and continue to play hard."

Dotson scored a career-high 25 points in the game for the Buccaneers as Charleston Southern connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers in the game as the Bucs went up by as many as 17 points in the contest with 14:02 remaining in the game. However, behind 18 second half points by Daeisha Brown, the Lancers shot 62.1 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes in pulling off their second Big South win in a row.

"[Longwood] played hard in the second half, they hit shots in that second half," Applin continued. "I kept telling our team that their three-point shooters are going to show up, and that is exactly what happened."

Charleston Southern falls to 4-9, 1-4 overall in Big South play on the season, while Longwood improves to 5-9, 2-3 with the win on Saturday afternoon.

"It is a hard loss because we had the lead and we played hard," Applin closed out with. "We had some good bench play again tonight. We had three post players we rotated in when [Rochelle] Brophy went out in the first half. We had three kids come in off the bench and play and that is something you've got to have. They came in and played hard."

Dotson led the Bucs as CSU shot 35.0 percent from the floor in the game, 46.2 percent in the first half as Charleston Southern boasted a 44-28 lead at the halftime break. Erin Bratcher added 16 points for the second consecutive game, connecting on four three-pointers in the game, while Alyssa Mann was also in double-digits for the game with 11 points.

Brown led the Lancers and all players on the night with 29 points as Longwood rebounded from a poor shooting first half in connecting at a 47.5 percent clip from the floor in the game. Deborah Headen was also in double-digits with 15 points, connecting on four treys for the Lancers in the victory.

The senior duo of Dotson and Bratcher sparked Charleston Southern to a 13-0 run to open the game. Dotson scored seven points and Bratcher connected on a pair of three-pointers, as the Bucs held Longwood scoreless for the opening three minutes of the contest. Dotson started the scoring with a layup off a feed from DJ Fowler, and Bratcher followed soon after with a three from the corner. A triple by Dotson advanced the CSU lead to 10-0 several possessions later, and Bratcher then capped the surge with a trey from the top of the key.

Dotson continued a strong first half with a pair of drives in the lane, one of which resulted in a three-point play. The three-point shot did most of the damage for CSU in the first half, though, and a Fowler three from the top of the key gave the Bucs a 24-11 advantage with 11:27 left.

Mann chipped in one of her three-first half treys shortly after to stake the Bucs to a 27-13 lead. Longwood countered with six straight points to cut the CSU lead down to eight, but the Bucs outscored the Lancers 17-9 over the remainder of the stanza to take a 44-28 edge into halftime.

Four Bratcher free throws started CSU's final first half push, before the Bucs continued their three-point barrage with treys by Mann and freshman Tatum Jarvis. Bratcher came off a ball screen to knock down CSU's ninth three of the first half, giving the Bucs a 42-25 lead with 2:31 remaining until intermission.

Led by 13 points from Bratcher and 12 from Dotson, the Bucs hit 9-of-19 from downtown in the first half and limited the Lancers to 2-of-12 from beyond the arc. CSU played well defensively overall as well, holding Longwood to 35 percent shooting while registering six steals and forcing ten turnovers.

Longwood tallied the first five points of the second half to climb within 11, but CSU built its lead back up to 16 by the first media timeout. Dotson drove baseline for a lay-in, Monique Maximilien hit the offensive glass for a put back, and Bratcher drilled a tough step-back three to give CSU a 51-35 lead.

Mann came up with a steal and an athletic finish in transition moments later, allowing CSU to match its largest margin of the game with a 54-37 lead at the 14:02 mark. The Bucs still led by 16 after four straight points by Dotson and a Jarvis drive and scoop, but Longwood rallied to within 60-57 on the strength of a 13-0 run.

Daiesha Brown connected on a three to start the run, and Deborah Headen connected on two in a row after a pair of free throws to suddenly whittle the CSU lead down to five. Raven Williams then swished a baseline pull-up to apply the finishing touches to run, pulling the Lancers back within three.

Headen began Longwood's decisive stretch with a three-pointer, before Brown drove for a pair of runners in the lane, and Heather Tobeck dropped in a jump hook to cut the CSU lead to 70-69 with 2:45 left.  Following a pair of misses by CSU, Brown penetrated for a layup to give Longwood its first lead, 71-70, with 2:07 left. Dotson split a pair of free throws to pull the Bucs even at 71 apiece, but the Lancers' Raven Williams found Khalilah Ali for a three-point play to push Longwood in front for good, 74-71, with 1:18 remaining. Dotson had a three-pointer that could have tied the game fall short with 23 seconds left, and Longwood hit four free throws to seal the win.

The Buccaneers return to the road in Big South play on Thursday evening as Charleston Southern travels to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on Campbell University. Tipoff between CSU and the Camels is set for 7 p.m. The Bucs close out the road trip next weekend against High Point, with tipoff at the Panthers set for 4:30 p.m.
