Box Score STATESBORO, Ga. - Charleston Southern battled Georgia Southern to a scoreless tie on Sunday evening at Eagle Field as the Buccaneers and Eagles finished knotted up at 0-0 following the completion of the second overtime period.
Freshman goalkeeper Dana McLaughlin came up big for the Buccaneers inside the net with eight saves in the goal box for CSU in recording her second shutout of the season. Toni Lashley added two shots, including a shot on goal for the Bucs in the tie.
Charleston Southern moves to 3-3-1 overall in the 2013 season, while Georgia Southern finished the contest with a 1-4-1 record.
The Buccaneers had the opening shots in the match as Lashley fired twice in the first four minutes, with her first shot attempt at the 1:15 mark sailing wide of the net, while her second attempt was collected by GSU goalkeeper Heather Kirkover at the 3:55 mark.
Ashley Lowdermilk attempted a shot at the 28:35 mark, but that was the final attempt the Buccaneers were able to send toward the net in the match as the team struggled to challenge Kirkover in the contest.
In the meantime, Georgia Southern had six shots in the first half and added eight in the second half, but McLaughlin proved up to the task with six saves over the opening 90 minutes. Her final save in regulation came at the 88:20 mark, collecting the shot by Alex Murphy to send the teams into overtime.
With golden goal rules in play, both teams searched for the score to end the match, but both goalkeepers and defenses proved up to the task with neither team able to find the back of the net. McLaughlin saved the final attempt, collecting McKenna Storey's header attempt at the 109:58 mark for the final save to end the match in the scoreless tie.
Charleston Southern is back in action on Friday afternoon as the Buccaneers host USC Upstate, with kickoff against the Spartans set for 4 p.m.
