CHARLESTON, S.C. - Angelica Henry hit a buzzer beater at the end
of regulation to send Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern into
overtime and iced the game from the free throw line as the visiting
Chanticleers held off the Lady Bucs on Thursday evening inside the
Buc Dome, 77-72.
With 3.2 seconds remaining and CSU clinging to a 62-59 lead
following a 13-0 run, the Lady Bucs had to inbound the ball
following a tipped inbounds pass going off Coastal Carolina.
Angelica Henry, however, intercepted the CSU entry pass, taking it
down the court and connecting on the game-tying three-pointer as
the clock expired, sending the teams into the overtime period.
Coastal Carolina scored the first eight points of the overtime
period as Connor scored on the opening possession with a short
jumper. Henry followed with a pair of free throw attempts and Cook
connected on a jumper on the fast break and a pair of free throws,
giving the Chanticleers the 70-62 lead.
Charleston Southern battled back with five straight points as
Fowler drove in for the layup, while Alston connected on a
three-pointer from the top of the key, bringing the Lady Bucs back
within three at 70-67 with 1:53 remaining.
Shay Jones helped the Bucs bringing the game back to within one
on the following possession, stealing a pass at half court and
finding DJ Fowler for the open layup. Connor connected on a basket
for the Chanticleers, but CSU answered on the other end from the
left corner as Bratcher drilled her fourth three-pointer of the
contest, knotting the score up at 72-all with 1:15 on the
clock.
Connor continued to carry the Chanticleers in the overtime
period, connecting on a leaning jump shot, banking it off the glass
from the shallow left corner with 50 ticks remaining to put CCU
back in the lead.
Henry and Pippin closed out the game from the free throw line
for the Chants, as two desperation shots for the Lady Bucs fell
short as Coastal Carolina finished the game with the season sweep
over Charleston Southern with the 77-72 victory.
Charleston Southern falls to 8-16, 3-12 in Big South Conference
play with the loss, while Coastal Carolina improves to 13-13 and
moves back to .500 with an 8-8 record in conference action with the
win.
Alston recorded her second double-double of the season against
the Chanticleers in the loss, finishing with 21 points and 13
rebounds, while DJ Fowler added 17 points and eight rebounds of her
own. Shay Jones and Erin Bratcher were also in double-digits with
14 points apiece, with Jones finishing the contest with eight
rebounds and five steals from the floor.
Connor led all players with 22 points and seven rebounds in the
win, playing all 45 minutes on the court for the Chants. Henry
finished with a balanced effort, scoring 18 points including her
game-tying trey, and added six rebounds, six steals and five
assists. Kayla Cook added 17 points off the bench, while Savanah
Pippin narrowly missed out on the double-double with nine points
and 13 rebounds.
At the beginning of the game, Katelyn Connor connected on
back-to-back jumpers to stake Coastal to the early 4-0 lead in the
first three possessions before Lakeitha Alston broke the seal on
the basket, making a pair of free throws with 18:20 to put CSU on
the board.
Alston followed with a tough layup off the offensive rebound,
making the subsequent free throw to give CSU their first lead of
the contest. Connor continued to have the hot hand for the
Chanticleers early, adding a pair of free throws to put Coastal up
6-5 with 17:21 on the clock and Angelica Henry followed with a
jumper in the paint to put CCU up 8-5.
Fowler connected on a three-pointer to even the score, sparking
a 16-2 CSU run over the next six minutes giving the Lady Bucs the
double-digit advantage at 21-10 with 11:26 remaining in the first
half. Shay Jones connected on three free throws after getting
fouled on a three-point attempt and Erin Bratcher connected on a
jumper and three-pointer from the right wing before Fowler closed
out the stretch with a layup to stake the Lady Bucs to the 11-point
lead.
The CSU lead remained in double-digits as the teams traded
scored as Henry connected on a pair of free throws, while Shay
Jones drove in for the layup to keep the margin at 11.
With the lead still 11 with 6:09 to play following a pair of
Jones' free throws, Coastal Carolina went on a 15-2 run to close
out the half. The run was sparked by a Savannah Pippin layup and
Henry scored seven points during the stretch, including connecting
on a three-pointer from the left wing.
Connor tied up the contest at 29-all with 54 seconds remaining
in the half and Pippin closed out the run with a short jumper in
the right corner off the pass from Henry to give the Chanticleers
the 31-29 halftime lead.
Alston had a chance to tie the game up from the free throw line
in the first minute of the second half, connecting on the first of
two free throw attempts to cut the lead down to one with 19:06 to
play.
Coastal responded with the next six points, going up 37-30 with
Connor, Kayla Cook and Pippin all connecting on jump shots to push
the Chanticleers ahead by seven.
Charleston Southern rallied back, bringing the game back to
within one possession on a layup by Alston with 11:01 remaining in
the game, cutting the lead to 37-35. The basket brought the CSU
senior forward to the 1,400 point mark in her career, one of only
five players in Lady Bucs history to reach the mark.
The Lady Bucs and Chanticleers continued to battle throughout
the second half, with CSU pulling back to within one on three
separate occasions, with Fowler cutting the lead down to one at the
8:33 mark after converting back-to-back layups, putting the score
at 47-46.
Coastal Carolina responded to the challenge with a 12-0 run,
extending their lead into double-digits for the first time in the
game at 56-46 as Kayla Cook connected on a short jumper inside the
paint with 5:46 remaining in the contest. Cook finished the twelve
point swing with a three-pointer from left wing before Jones ended
the CSU scoreless stretch with a pair of free throws at the 4:12
mark.
The free throws began a 13-0 CSU run as the Lady Bucs fought
their way back into the game.
A Jones steal led to a Bratcher three-pointer from the left
corner on the following possession and Alston connected on a trey
from the top of the key pulling the Lady Bucs back to within five
points with 59-54 with 2:59 to play in the contest. Alston
converted a difficult layup before Bratcher connected on her third
trey of the game, this one from the right wing off the assist from
Jones to knot the game up at 59-all with 1:45 to play.
Alston advanced the CSU lead to 62-59 with 4.7 seconds remaining
in the contest, making three of four free throw attempts and the
Lady Bucs forced a turnover on the CCU inbounds pass, setting up
Henry's late-game heroics.
Charleston Southern shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor
in the loss, while Coastal connected on 42.4 percent (28-of-66) of
their attempts. The Chants held the 47-38 rebounding edge in the
contest, doing most of their damage with the 24-12 edge in points
off turnovers. The Chants held the 26-0 advantage in scoring off
the bench.
Charleston Southern remains at home as the Lady Bucs recognize
their five 2012-2013 season seniors in a pregame ceremony before
taking on Campbell on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff between the CSU
and the Camels inside the Buc Dome is set for 2 p.m. Coastal
Carolina is back in action next week as the Chanticleers travel to
the Vines Center and Lynchburg, Va. to take on Liberty next
Thursday evening, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
