Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. - Charleston Southern jumped ahead to a quick lead, but four Winthrop players scored double-digits in the game as the Buccaneers closed out their final road trip of the 2013 calendar year with a 69-49 loss inside the Winthrop Coliseum on Monday afternoon.
DJ Fowler had 16 points for the Buccaneers on the afternoon as Charleston Southern wrapped up a 1-1 road trip in Big South Conference play, after beginning their travels on Saturday with the 84-64 victory over Radford. Fowler added six rebounds and three steals to her totals to pace the CSU offense on the afternoon as the Bucs held the lead for the first four minutes of the contest before a 14-2 swing by the Eagles put Winthrop ahead for the remainder of the game.
Winthrop scored the first four points of the afternoon before Erin Bratcher and Alyssa Mann connected on back-to-back three pointers to give CSU the early 6-4 lead with 17:14 on the clock. A third three-pointer in the early going, this one by Fowler at the 15:50 mark put the Bucs ahead 9-8, but back-to-back free throws by Schaquilla Nunn gave the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Charleston Southern fell to 4-7, 1-2 in Big South play on the season with the loss, while Winthrop improved to 8-3, 3-0 in conference action.
Fowler went 5-for-13 from the floor in the game to lead the Bucs on the afternoon to support a CSU offense that struggled overall in shooting 24.6 percent as a group. The Bucs did shoot 84.6 percent from the charity stripe in the game though, led by Fowler's perfect 5-for-5 afternoon from the line.
Anicia Dotson and Natasha Lebedeva both score six points apiece on the afternoon, while Dotson had seven rebounds to pace the Buccaneers defensive efforts as CSU and Winthrop battled through a stalemate on the glass with 42 rebounds apiece.
Samiya Wright led the Eagles scoring efforts on the afternoon with 19 points in the game, while Nunn had 17 points and five blocked shots in the game. Erica Williams was also in double-digits with 14 points, while Dequesha McClanahan recorded the double-double for Winthrop with 10 points and 14 assists overall. Taylor Calvert led the WU rebounding efforts with 10 boards in the game.
Winthrop went up by as many as 21 points in the first half, taking their largest lead with 1:35 remaining on the clock following a Pamela Decheva three-pointer to go up 44-23 overall. However, Charleston Southern would put the final points on the board in the half as Tatum Jarvis connected on a pair of free throw attempts with 11 ticks on the clock to put the teams into the halftime break with CSU trailing 44-25.
The Buccaneers opened up the second half with the first five points of the period as Dotson drilled a jumper off the assist from Kirklin Kirkpatrick and Fowler drove in and was fouled on a layup, converting the ensuing free throw attempt to cut the margin down to 44-30 with 17:43 remaining in the game.
The Eagles responded with a 13-4 run in building their largest lead of the game at 57-34 following back-to-back Wright three-pointers with the final coming at the 13:39 mark. Williams added four points during the run to stretch the lead back out as Winthrop attempted to put the game away.
CSU continued to battle back, making one final run sparked by a Christal Barnett jumper as the Bucs narrowed the margin back down to 14 with 5:02 remaining. Dotson converted a free throw attempt before Erin Bratcher came up with the steal and layup to put the score at 61-47 as CSU rallied back for the final time.
However, Wright and Williams both answered with baskets for the Eagles and Nunn converted two jumpers late as the Eagles held CSU scoreless for the final five minutes before Brianna Lakes put in a jumper in the final seconds for Bucs as Charleston Southern fell in Big South play.
Charleston Southern rallied back in the second half with 15 points off of Winthrop turnovers in battling back into the game, and the Buccaneers bench outscored the Eagles 16-9 overall in the contest as well. Winthrop however, took advantage of 51.9 percent shooting and a 38-22 advantage of points in the paint to remain undefeated in Big South play on the year.
The Buccaneers return home for a two-game home stand this weekend as CSU hosts Liberty and Longwood in Big South play. Charleston Southern hosts Liberty on Thursday night with tipoff set for 7 p.m. inside the Buc Dome, while the Bucs take on the Longwood Lancers on Saturday afternoon with game time slated for 2 p.m.
