Box Score CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to overcome North Carolina runs to start each half as host #15/#14 UNC topped the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon inside Carmichael Arena, 100-49.
Reminiscent of their last contest dating back to November 29, 2009, Charleston Southern displayed an accurate shooting touch from the outside in the first half, cutting the Tar Heels lead down to 12 points and keeping them within striking distance behind the outside shooting prowess of Erin Bratcher. However, the second half saw the Tar Heels put the game away with a 15-0 run to open the final 20 minutes of the contest as the Bucs fell on the road to their second ranked opponent on the season.
Bratcher led the Buccaneers with 14 points in the game, connecting on four three-pointers in the contest to pace the CSU offense overall. DJ Fowler was also in double-digits with 12 points, adding a pair of steals to her totals on the season.
Xylina McDaniel led five Tar Heels in double-digits with 15 points on the night, while Stephanie Mavunga completed the double-double down low with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Allisha Gray and N'Dea Bryant both added 14 points apiece, while Diamond DeShields had 10 points and seven assists to pace the UNC offense.
Charleston Southern falls to 3-4 overall on the year with the loss, while North Carolina improves to 8-2 with the home victory.
North Carolina scored the first nine points of the game on their way to jumping out to a 24-3 lead early in the first half. Bratcher connected on the Buccaneers' first basket of the game, a three-pointer from the left corner with 16:07 to go in the first half to put the score at 10-3, but UNC went answered with a 14-0 run in building their largest lead of the first half following Danielle Butts' jumper with 11:54 to play in the half.
Fowler ended the UNC run with a pair of free throws as the Buccaneers went on a 9-0 run to halve the UNC lead over the next two minutes. Bratcher had the hot hand in the first half, connecting on back-to-back baskets during the stretch, including one of her four first half three-pointers as the run was capped by a short jumper in the paint by Fowler to narrow the margin down to 24-12 with 9:49 remaining.
In a fast-paced first half which saw the Tar Heels turn 13 CSU turnovers into 26 points, the Bucs battled back from behind the three-point line behind Bratcher's sharp-shooting as the senior guard capped off the scoring in the opening 20 minutes with a banked-in three-pointer from the top of the key to put the margin at 49-30 heading into the halftime break.
The Tar Heels opened the second half with a 15-0 run as UNC went up by as many as 40 points with 7:15 remaining on their way to closing out the contest with the 100-49 victory.
Charleston Southern was paced by five points each by the trio of Anicia Dotson, Fowler and Alise Karlsone in the second half to close out the contest as the Buccaneers fell on the road inside Carmichael Arena.
Monique Maximilien led a tough interior defense for the Buccaneers on the game, recording a team-high eight rebounds as CSU fell in the close rebounding margin, 43-37. The difference in the game came in points off of turnovers, as UNC turned 31 CSU miscues into 44 points on the night, including the 22-2 edge in fast break points.
Charleston Southern continues the 2013-14 season on the road as the Buccaneers travel to Cullowhee, N.C., to take on Western Carolina. Tipoff for the Monday night matchup between the Bucs and the Catamounts inside the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center is set for 7 p.m.
