Radford wins battle of boards, downs Lady Bucs 64-57

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Victoria Hamilton finished with a double-double as Radford won the battle of the boards in holding off Charleston Southern inside the Buc Dome on Thursday evening, 64-57.

The Lady Bucs (6-13, 1-9 Big South) led 32-27 at the halftime break, but an 11-0 run in the second half sparked by Hamilton and Ayana Avery led Radford (12-7, 7-3 Big South).

Shay Jones finished the contest leading Charleston Southern with 14 points, and the senior guard added six assists, five rebounds and seven steals in 33 minutes' action in the loss.

"Shay is in her last year, her senior year and she's playing well, wanting to go all out on every play," said head coach Fred Applin following the contest on his senior guard's effort. "As a team though, we have to limit the turnovers and get more rebounds. We still have a lot to work on."

Lakeitha Alston added 11 points, playing all 40 minutes of the contest, while DJ Fowler finished in double-digits with 10 points as the Lady Bucs shot 42.6 percent (23-54) from the floor and 50.0 percent (6-12) from the three-point line in the game.

Freshman guard Zhaquondalee' Greer scored six points and added a team-high five rebounds for Charleston Southern off the bench as CSU took advantage of 23 Radford turnovers in scoring 28 points in the game. The Highlanders held the 17-8 edge in second chance opportunities.

"Zhaquondalee' played well for us today," said Applin on Greer's performance off the bench. "We told her she had to come out and give us something and we used her a lot in this game. She started the second half and she came out and competed on the floor. We're really happy about her performance."

Radford controlled the rebounding edge, out-rebounding the Lady Bucs 45-25 paced by Hamilton's 14 point, 10 rebound performance. Avery added a team high 15 points and five rebounds, while Da'Naria Erwin Spencer was also in double-digits with 11 points as Radford made 21 of 29 free throw attempts in the win.

"I think they (Radford) had 20 offensive rebounds and we can't give up that many," commented Applin on the Highlanders' edge on the glass. "Our girls played their hearts out, but there was a period of three minutes where we didn't score and that was the difference."

Jones opened the scoring in the game driving in for the layup and Fowler connected on her first three-pointer of the game to stake CSU to the early 5-0 lead before Erwin Spencer put the Highlanders on the board with a pair of free throws, putting the game at 5-2 with 16:49 remaining in the first half.

Erwin Spencer's free throws began an 8-0 run capped by a pair of free throws by Breshara Gordon as Radford built an 8-5 lead in the contest with 13:28 on the clock.

Erin Bratcher and Avery traded three-pointers on the teams' next trips down the court to keep the scoring margin the game and Erwin Spencer followed with a short jumper to give Radford their largest lead of the first half at 13-8 with 10:15 to play in the opening half.

Bratcher swung the lead back in favor of CSU, sparking a 10-0 run with a pair of three-pointers, the second giving CSU the 14-13 advantage at the 9:37 mark. Greer played a hand in closing out the run, catching an offensive rebound off a Jones' miss and putting the ball back in the basket, and followed on the next possession with an assist on a Alston layup to put the Lady Bucs up 18-13 with 7:45 to play.

Erwin Spencer ended the Radford scoreless draught with a layup and Avery followed with a three-pointer to knot the game up for the third time in the game two minutes later, and Radford followed a Greer jumper with free throws by Ashia Holmes and Walker to tie the game at 20-20 with 6:06 remaining in the first half.

The Lady Bucs responded to the tie with a 12-4 run spanning the next four minutes with Fowler and Alston combining for nine points during the run, while Jones capped the stretch with a layup and a free throw to give CSU their largest lead of the first half at the 1:47 mark with the Lady Bucs in the lead, 32-24.

Radford closed out the first half with the final three points as Ashley Buckhannon connected on a jumper in the paint, while Diani Mason converted the second of two free throw attempts in the final putting the score at 32-27 in favor of the Lady Bucs at the halftime break.

Walker opened up the second half with a pair of free throws as Radford scored the first six points of the half in taking a 33-32 lead with 16:42 to play following a jumper in the paint by Victoria Hamilton.

The teams kept the game within one possession for the next nine minutes, tying five times with the final tie score coming with 7:01 to play as Jones connected on a three-pointer from the right wing to knot the game up at 49-all.

Coming out of the tie, Radford went on an 11-0 run as Hamilton and Avery combining for all points scored during the three minute span to give Radford the only double-digit lead either team had in the game, putting the Highlanders up 60-49 with 4:12 to play.

CSU cut the lead down to five as Anicia Dotson scored five points and Fowler chipped in a free throw, pulling the Lady Bucs within 60-55 with 1:07 to play, but Radford closed out the game from the free throw line, hitting four of their final six attempts in recording the season sweep over Charleston Southern with the 64-57 victory inside the Buc Dome.

"We have to take care of the ball and limit the turnovers," said Applin on the team's upcoming game against Winthrop. "We have a lot to work on and go over tomorrow. It all comes down to rebounding and taking care of the ball."

Charleston Southern remains at home as the Lady Bucs welcome Winthrop University to the Buc Dome on Saturday afternoon, with tipoff set for 2 p.m. Radford continues their road tour of South Carolina, traveling to Conway and Coastal Carolina, with tipoff inside The HTC Center slated for 4 p.m.
