ROCK HILL, S.C. - Two Winthrop players recorded double-doubles
as the Lady Eagles withstood a furious CSU comeback early in the
second half as the Lady Bucs fell in Big South Conference action on
Thursday evening inside the Winthrop Coliseum, 85-65.
Charleston Southern (5-10, 0-6 BSC) cut a 20 point deficit down
to five points early in the second half using a 21-4 run sparked by
a barrage of three-pointers by Erin Bratcher, DJ Fowler and Anicia
Dotson to put the score at 50-45 with 13:48 to play in the
game.
The lead remained at five as Shay Jones answered Schaquilla
Nunn's jumper with one of her one on the next possession, but
Winthrop (10-8, 4-2 BSC) scored the next five points to extend the
lead back out to double-digits as the Eagles went on a 29-9 run
spanning the next 10 minutes in closing out their fourth conference
win of the season.
Erin Bratcher led the way for Charleston Southern with 17
points, connecting on five three-pointers in the game as the junior
guard led four Lady Bucs in double figures in the scoring column on
the evening. Fowler was perfect from the free throw line in
finishing the game with 13 points, while Lakeitha Alston (10) and
Shay Jones (10) were also in double-digits in the loss.
Samiya Wright led all players with 19 points for the Lady Eagles
inside the Coliseum, while Diana Choibekova and Nunn both finished
the game with double-doubles with Choibekova finishing with 15
points and 12 rebounds, while Nunn had 12 and 10. Aliyah Kilpatrick
finished with 17 points, while Dequesha McClanahan led the offense
with 16 points and eight assists in 30 minutes' action.
Winthrop jumped ahead early scoring 18 of the first 20 points in
the first seven minutes of the contest as Choibekova scored eight
early points, while McClanahan had six of her own in the early
lead. Whitney Collins scored the lone CSU basket as the Lady Eagles
led 18-2 with 13:19 to play in the first half.
The lead reached 20 with 7:18 on the clock as Kilpatrick
connected on a three-pointer to extend the Winthrop lead to 31-11,
but CSU continued to battle back in the half as Jones and Alston
hit back-to-back three-pointers on the Lady Bucs' next two
possessions. Charleston Southern continued to keep the game within
reach as Fowler drove in for a jumper inside the paint with 1:32 to
play to pull CSU back to 12 at 38-26.
McClanahan and Wright closed out the first half with the final
five points to push the Winthrop lead to 17 as the Lady Eagles went
ahead 43-26 at the halftime break.
McClanahan kept the Winthrop offense going with a three-pointer
to open the second half, but Fowler answered with a trey of her own
to keep the deficit the same.
Monique Maximilen followed a Bratcher miss with a jumper and
free throw before Bratcher connected on back-to-back three-pointers
to bring CSU back to within 10 points at 48-38 with 16:25 to
play.
Choibekova stemmed the Lady Bucs tide with a jumper to push the
Winthrop lead to 12, but Dotson answered with a three-pointer to
bring the Lady Eagles lead down to single digits for the first time
since the opening minutes of the game. Bratcher followed with her
third three-pointer in three minutes and Jones made a free throw to
pull CSU within 50-45 with 13:48 to play in the game.
The teams traded scores as Winthrop's lead slowly crept back to
double-digits following a jumper by Wright with 9:46 to play, but
Bratcher followed with a trey to keep the game within reach.
Nunn scored again two possessions later for the Lady Eagles,
beginning an 18-0 run capped by a Kilpatrick three-pointer as
Winthrop built their largest lead of the game at 79-54 with 4:16 to
play.
CSU attempted to bring the game back from the free throw line as
Jones hit four from the line and Bratcher connected on her fifth
three-pointer of the half, but the Lady Bucs were unable to mount a
comeback as time expired with the Lady Eagles recording the 85-65
victory.
Collins led the Lady Bucs rebounding efforts on the evening,
finishing with a season-high eight rebounds, but Winthrop held the
51-41 edge on the glass.
Charleston Southern continues Big South action this weekend as
the Lady Bucs travel to Radford, Va. as CSU takes on the
Highlanders on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff between CSU and Radford
is set for 3 p.m. inside Dedmon Center Arena.
