Longwood holds off Lady Bucs rally in 67-52 win

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Chelsea Coward led all players with 23 points and 12 rebounds as Longwood held off Charleston Southern despite Lakeitha Alston's second double-double of the season in recording the 67-52 Big South victory inside the Buc Dome on Saturday afternoon.

Alston recorded her second double-double in the past three games with 11 points and 12 rebounds for Charleston Southern (5-9, 0-5 BSC) with all nine Lady Bucs who saw action in the game scoring in the loss to the Lancers. DJ Fowler added nine points and five rebounds for CSU as the Lady Bucs shot 30.0 percent (15-for-50) from the floor in the game.

Coward added two blocked shots and two steals to her totals, going 10-for-17 from the floor and made three three-pointers for Longwood (7-9, 4-1 BSC) in the victory. Crystal Smith added 20 points and six assists in the win, while Daeisha Brown was also in double-digits with 13 points as the Lancers shot 44.6 percent (29-for-65) as a team in the victory.

Alston opened the scoring on the first CSU possession with the layup off the pass from DJ Fowler, but Brown answered on the following Longwood possession as the teams battled early in the contest.

The Lancers went up four following Coward's first three-pointer of the game with 14:44 to play, but CSU rallied to take the 11-10 lead as Alston connected on a trey from the top of the key and Shay Jones drove in for the layup to retake the lead as the teams went through three ties and five lead changes in the first eight minutes of the half.

Following a Fowler free throw, Coward tied the game up for the third time with a driving layup and hit her second three-pointer of the half two possessions later as the Lancers went on a 7-0 run. Brown capped the run with a jumper in the paint at the 11:00 mark to put the score at 17-12.

Zhaquondalee' Greer kept the game within one possession for the Lady Bucs, connecting on a jumper and followed a Brown layup with a pair of free throws with 8:57 to play in the half putting the score at 19-16.

CSU continued to keep the game within reach from the free throw line, hitting 11 of 16 attempts from the charity stripe in the half as Whitney Collins hit a pair and Fowler made two as the Lady Bucs rallied to bring the score within one at 21-20 with 4:39 remaining in the half.

Mieke Elkington ended the CSU run with a three-pointer on the following Longwood possession, jump-starting a 9-2 run with Crystal Smith scoring four points during the stretch to give the Lancers their largest lead of the half at 30-22 with 1:17 to play.

Charleston Southern closed out the half from the foul line as Anicia Dotson and Greer went 4-for-4 from the stripe over the final minute to send the teams into the break with the score at 30-26 in favor of the guests.

Turnovers plagued the Lady Bucs in the first minute of the second half as Longwood turned three steals into six points as Smith and Neal made shots on the fast break to push the score to 36-26 with 19:22 remaining in the game.

The Lady Bucs rallied with an 8-2 run as Erin Bratcher sandwiched a jumper by Monique Maximilien with a pair of three-pointers to cut the lead down to four at 39-35 with 13:51 to play, but Smith ended the CSU run with a trey from the left wing as Longwood went back up double-digits with 12:18 to play. Coward and Brown both scored layups on the fast break to put the score at 46-35 during the run.

Following a pair of foul shots by Jones with 8:52 on the clock narrowing the Lancers' lead down to nine at 50-41, Longwood went on a 17-9 run, building their largest lead of the game with 4:12 remaining in the game following a layup by Deborah Headen.

Both teams struggled to score over the final four minutes with CSU forcing four Longwood turnovers during the stretch. Alston placed in the final points with a layup at the 2:04 mark as the Lady Bucs fell for the fifth time in conference play in the 2012-2013 season, 67-52.

Charleston Southern battled through 21 turnovers in the game, but kept the contest close from the free throw line as six Lady Bucs made at least two attempts from the charity stripe as CSU was 18-for-26 (69.2 percent) from the line in the game.

The Lady Bucs also led the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Longwood 39-36 in the loss.

Longwood pulled away from CSU with 36 points in the paint and 25 points off of turnovers, outscoring the Lady Bucs 12-0 on the fast break.

Charleston Southern continues Big South play next week on the road as the Lady Bucs travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Winthrop on Thursday evening with tipoff set for 7 p.m. Longwood also remains in Big South play, returning home on Thursday to host Campbell with tipoff also at 7 p.m.
