CHARLESTON, S.C. - Morgan Dowdy penned her second complete game, two-hit shutout of the season to propel the Charleston Southern softball team over Longwood, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. Freshman Jen Giles picked up right where Dowdy left off for CSU (12-13) in the second game of the day against Ohio, but the Bobcats edged the Bucs, 2-1.

Game One
Dowdy (8-6) was in control all day against the Lancers (17-9), holding them to just two hits while striking out five. The 5-9 junior from Pleasanton, California was also able to overcome four walks as she went the distance for the tenth time in 17 starts to date.

Longwood's Libby Morris was on top of her game as well, scattering six hits and three walks over 6.0 frames, while striking out six and yielding two runs. Stephanie Sbardella and Jana Matthews once again provided an offensive spark to get the Bucs going in the bottom half of the sixth, as they accounted for the contest's only two markers.

Sbardella worked a walk and then raced 180 feet to the plate when Jana Matthews hammered a double to left-center field on a 1-2 offering from Morris. Freshman Hannah Wagner was next, and kept the line moving with a soft line drive into right field for her second base knock of the day. Morris secured a pair of outs to keep Matthews at third, but senior Melissa Adams came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to deliver Matthews home for the final 2-0 outcome.

Dowdy made sure the score would stick in Longwood's last turn at-bat in the top of the seventh, as she notched a pair of groundouts before catching Leigh Sexton looking at a called strike three to end it.

Game Two
The Bobcats (9-10) dropped a 7-0 decision to Longwood in the first leg of the tripleheader, but set the tone immediately against the Bucs with a run apiece in the first and second innings.

Ohio pieced together a two-hit rally off Giles (2-6) to assume the advantage in the opening frame, as Chelsea Hortman was hit by a pitch and came home on Raven King's RBI double to deep center field.

Jenna Guisti reached on an infield single to start the second, but was still 60 feet away from the dish two outs later. Jillian Van Wagner took care of that, though, stroking an infield single of her own to give Ohio a 2-0 cushion.

CSU mounted several threats and was able to cash in for its only run against Ohio starter Caitlin Colvin in the bottom of the third. Megan Lombard worked a one-out walk, and Ari Tedesco (pinch-running for Lombard) found her way to third on a wild pitch and passed ball, and then on to the plate when Sbardella lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.

Kaylin Clarke (2-2) proved to be the difference-maker for Ohio, garnering the victory after spinning 4.2 frames of shutout relief.

The Bucs best opportunity at a comeback came in the sixth, as Wagner smacked a single and Jessica Brock reached on an error to put the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base. Clarke found her way out of the jam, however, by getting Linzy Rother to sky out to right field.

Clarke set down the Bucs 1-2-3 in the last of the seventh to cap off the win. Brock registered two hits to pace CSU offensively, and was joined in the hit column by Wagner and Matthews.

CSU wraps up the Charleston Southern Tournament Sunday at 3 p.m. against Ohio. The Bobcats and Lancers will meet in the first game of the day at 1 p.m.
