CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern women's basketball
team cut a 21-point second half deficit to seven, but Campbell
responded with a 19-8 game-ending run to prevail, 76-58, on Monday
night at the CSU Fieldhouse.
CSU (15-11, 8-7) placed three players in double figures, led by
17 points each from juniors Rachelle Coward and Lakeitha Alston,
but shot just 35 percent as a team for the game. Redshirt junior
point guard Kiki Rutledge chipped in 14 markers and tied for a
team-high with 3 assists in defeat.
Campbell (15-10, 8-6) earned a season-sweep of the Bucs by
riding the hot-hand of junior sharpshooter Tonisha Baker, who
poured in a game-high 25 points on a blistering 10-of-14 mark from
the field. Katelyn Boss controlled the paint for the Fighting
Camels, recording a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds as
Campbell enjoyed a 45-34 advantage on the glass.
Rutledge's baseline drive gave CSU a 13-11 lead at the 14:49
mark of the first half, but it would be the last advantage they
would enjoy as Campbell knocked down back-to-back treys to move in
front for good.
CSU was still within two at 22-20 after Coward swished home
back-to-back threes, but Campbell ran off a 22-10 run over the
remaining ten minutes to enter halftime with a 44-30 lead.
The Fighting Camels stretched the cushion to as many as 21 with
17:50 remaining, only to see CSU respond with an 18-4 charge to
whittle the margin to seven at 57-50 on a fast break layup by
Dotson with 7:37 left.
With its home slate now complete, CSU hits the road for three
Big South road games to end the regular season before participating
in the conference tournament. First up is a meeting with rival
Coastal Carolina on Saturday at 2 p.m.
